Even as Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has a mere one more season remaining on his contract with the club, he has no plans on signing off on an extension deal in the coming months.

Guardiola took some time to speak to Sky Sports ahead of Manchester City’s Premier League away fixture against West Ham United, where he laid out his plans for such talks with club officials.

“If I extend the contract, it will be at the end of the next season,” Guardiola said. “Before that is not going to happen. It is many years and I have to see how the team and ourselves are together. Knowing and saying I would stay for 10 more years but we have to take time for that.

“It is not the time for that in this season or during the next season.”

Guardiola has signed two extension deals over his run at Manchester City, with the last one coming back in 2020. He put pen to paper on a two-year extension agreement that upped his contract length until 2023.

Guardiola has gone back and forth regarding his managerial future. He noted last year that he would be interested in managing a national team “if there is a possibility.” However, he did add earlier this year that he would entertain the idea of staying at Manchester City and signing off on a 10-year extension deal.

For now, Guardiola has much attention on Manchester City’s remaining two fixtures in the season. Guardiola’s side is on the doorstep of clinching the Premier League title for the second consecutive campaign, as it holds a three-point lead over second place Liverpool.
