Detroit Pistons star rookie Cade Cunningham was on pace to set his career-high in scoring on Sunday against the Phoenix Suns. Unfortunately, after celebrating a reverse dunk, Cunningham was ejected midway through the third quarter. While Cunningham's antics after the dunk didn't seem to warrant an ejection, referee Kevin Cutler dismissed him without hesitation. After the game, Cunningham commented on his ejection and kept a surprisingly level head about the situation, via James Edwards III.

After throwing down the reverse dunk, Cunningham could be seen pointing in the direction of the Pistons bench. Soon after, the whistles began to sound out, and Cunningham looked around in confusion before slowly realizing he had actually been ejected. The technical he received for pointing to the bench was his second technical foul of the game, resulting in his ejection.

Despite the dubious nature of the ejection, Cunningham didn't argue the decision, and his post-game comments showcased a surprising level of maturity from a 20-year-old, especially considering the type of game he was having prior to his unjust ousting.

Cunningham explained to reporters that he had his “people” behind the bench and that he “should have processed the situation after.” The former No. 1 overall pick approached Suns head coach Monty Williams after the game to apologize for his antics.

Prior to his ejection, Cunningham was lighting up the Suns, having scored 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting alongside four assists. The rookie's career-high in scoring was a 29-point game against the Utah Jazz, and there's reason to believe he would have surpassed that total had he not fallen victim to some questionable officiating.
