No team wants to use their backup quarterback, but backups are important, especially in a competitive division like the AFC East. The New York Jets hope they improved their backup quarterback position by bringing in Joe Flacco, but do they have the best backup situation in the AFC East?

Let's rank each team by their quarterback position.

4. Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills have Matt Barkley, Jake Fromm, and Davis Webb sitting behind Josh Allen. Webb is going to have a hard time making the roster so he's ruled out by default. Barkley is a fine backup, but if he has to start a game, the Bills are going to have numerous issues moving the ball in the air.

Jake Fromm very well could turn out to be a solid backup for the Bills, or maybe even a good starter in this league, but he is a project at best presently. The Bills will probably keep two backups this season, with Barkley getting the first crack, but he won't be winning a game if called upon.

3. New York Jets

The New York Jets recently signed Joe Flacco to be the backup quarterback, but there are questions about his health after undergoing neck surgery earlier in the offseason. David Fales, Mike White, and James Morgan are also on the roster competing for a backup job.

Everyone is talking about Flacco, but Morgan was the team's 2020 fourth-round draft pick, and is the player to be more excited about. Much like Fromm, though, he is a project and he shouldn't be much of a factor this year.

2. New England Patriots

All signs are pointing towards Jarrett Stidham being the starter in New England this year, which leaves Brian Hoyer as his backup. Hoyer has plenty of experience and head coach Bill Belichick and coordinator Josh McDaniels know how to use him. The Patriots are going to put Hoyer in the right position to succeed.

Even though there could be an argument made that Flacco is the better backup option in general, the way the Patriots will use Hoyer puts them second in the division.

1. Miami Dolphins

Who the Miami Dolphins backup quarterback will be this year is still a question awaiting answer, but no matter who it is, they are in the best position in the AFC East.

If Ryan Fitzpatrick is the backup, they have a great veteran who has proven he can still win games in the NFL. If it's Tua Tagovailoa they have a quarterback who is young, but has all the makings of a superstar in the league. If either goes down with injury, the Dolphins are in a great position to not skip a beat in the passing game.
