The Boston Red Sox have quietly been the hottest team in baseball for over a month. Entering play Tuesday, Boston was 28-10 over their last 38 games. They had their seven-game win streak snapped Monday by the Toronto Blue Jays 7-2. On Tuesday, the Red Sox were looking to start a new win streak. They held a 5-4 lead into the 9th inning, but that’s where it all went wrong.

Boston unfortunately did not have their closer available. But not because he had pitched too much recently. Tanner Houck is unvaccinated and therefore cannot travel with the team into Canada. That left fans ripping him online.

Boston was left going with Tyler Danish to try and close out the game. Danish has never recorded a save in his relatively brief career. He gave up a hit and a walk before being replaced by Hansel Robles. Robles proceeded to give up an RBI base hit to Bo Bichette, tying the game. Blue Jays superstar Vlad Guerrero Jr. then hit a walk-off single scoring George Springer, sending Jays fans home happy and the Red Sox to a sudden two-game mini skid.

Every game between these American League East is massively important. The New York Yankees are on a near-record pace this season. They are 55-20 and hold a 12.5 game lead over Toronto. Meanwhile, the Red Sox are 13 games back. More than likely, the AL wild card spots will come down to some combination of Tampa Bay, Toronto, Boston and maybe Cleveland.

Red Sox fans have to hope that they can’t look back to this game at season’s end and wonder what if.
