Alex Smith, whose gruesome broken leg injury put his football career — and his life — in jeopardy, has been given clearance to resume full football activity, as reported by Stephania Bell of ESPN on Friday:

During a Week 11 contest versus the Houston Texans, Smith suffered a gruesome leg injury. While dropping back to pass, Smith was hit by Kareem Jackson and J.J. Watt. Instead of being a normal sack, Smith would be put in for an uphill climb to return to the NFL after fracturing his tibia and fibula.

Following the injury, Alex Smith would undergo surgery and would miss the entire 2019 season as a result.

At the same time, Alex Smith would deal with a post-operation infection to his leg, causing more difficulties in his recovery process. While speaking about his story on ESPN's Outside the Lines earlier this year, Smith uttered that he was ‘very much lucky to be alive'.

Smith, who turned 36 years old in May, is going to be taking a physical on Monday at Washington's facility. Regardless of the outcome of the physical, it still remains to be seen what his role with the team would be with Dwayne Haskins and Kyle Allen holding the top two spots on the depth chart.

Given the tall task of returning to the gridiron, there were reports that Smith could join Washington's front office. However, after countless hours of fighting his way back, Smith is going to have a chance to play in the NFL once again. Even though 2020 has been a rough year thus far, seeing Smith able to suit up again is a bright spot in the sports world.
