Washington Redskins running back Derrius Guice's pro career has been tough. The LSU product entered the NFL with a lot of fanfare, but he has had terrible luck. Expected to be Washington's starter as a rookie, he tore his ACL last year.

He then suffered complications and an infection, and had to undergo multiple surgeries. It's been a long road to recovery, and it appears Guice still isn't fully healthy.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden said recently that Guice still hasn't been fully cleared to play, per John Keim of ESPN.com.

Keim notes that Guice has been participating in practice, but that he's “not sure when he’ll play in the preseason.” This isn't what Guice needs. He now faces serious competition in the backfield. After Guice went down last year, the team signed Adrian Peterson.

Peterson had a surprisingly strong resurgent year, and the Redskins brought him back for 2019. Pass-catcher Chris Thompson will also be gobbling up a bunch of snaps, so Guice is going to have a hard time getting a lot of touches.

That said, Guice will still have a chance to shine if he can get healthy. The Redskins drafted him in the second round for a reason, and in their ideal world he would return soon and run away with the starting job. He was electric in college, rushing for at least 1,250 yards in each of his last two seasons at LSU. For him to tap into that potential, he'll need to get back to full health first.
