The Washington Redskins have been surrounded by controversy for a very long time. That controversy has been all about the team name.

For years, a lot of people have been saying that the name is racist. And many have been lobbying for the team to change their name and logo. Over the years, this has gained a lot of steam at different times. However, Washington always seems to get by without anything really coming of the outrage.

This time felt different though. With everything going on, it didn’t seem like the outrage was going to slow down.

Suddenly, sponsors were asking the team to change. Big sponsors too. Companies were taking all merchandise of the team off their shelves as well. And now it appears inevitable that it is happening.

It looks like the team might be closing in on something though. According to John Keim of ESPN, Washington plans on keeping the burgundy and gold color scheme as of right now.

This was expected. It makes it much easier for the new team name to transition. With the team wanting to get this done before the season, they can basically keep the same jerseys this season without much of a worry.

Then next season, they can change the jerseys and everything to match the team a little better.

While it does make a lot of sense when thinking about it that way, it takes out some of the fun. This severely limits the naming options. And it keeps the team away from a total rebrand—something that they might want to consider.

Remember, they need to find something that stays away from any type of insensitivity because they don’t want to be going through this again in a few years.

At the same time, Washington has been bad for a long time. So a total rebrand might not be a bad idea. New name, logo, colors and jerseys. Why not? Switch things up and see if the team can find a new identity.
