Rockets C Nene suffers calf injury setback, will be re-evaluated in 2 weeks

Houston Rockets big man Nene suffered a setback in his recovery from a calf strain injury and he will be re-evaluated in two weeks, according to Kelly Iko of The Athletic.

Nene has yet to play in a game this season. The Rockets have started the year 1-3.

Nene played in 52 regular season games in 2017-18 for the Rockets. The 36-year-old averaged 6.5 points and 3.4 rebounds while shooting 56.9 percent from the field in roughly 15 minutes of game action.

Nene, a 16-year NBA veteran, signed a three-year, $10.9 million deal with the Rockets in 2017. In 923 career games, the big man has averages of 11.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists with the Denver Nuggets, Washington Wizards, and Rockets.

The Brazilian is the primary backup to Clint Capela at the center position. Marquese Chriss is still out with an ankle ailment and Zhou Qi is recovering from a knee injury he suffered in the preseason. In other words, Capela will continue to have a heavy workload in the Rockets’ frontcourt.

The Rockets host the Los Angeles Clippers Friday and will look to snap a two-game losing streak. Starting point guard Chris Paul will return from his two-game suspension.

Nene is playing on a three-year contract worth $10.9 million which he signed with the team last year.
