Houston Rockets big man Christian Wood's foot problems continue this season, as he re-injured a bothersome right ankle against the Memphis Grizzlies at FedEx Forum on Thursday. The Rockets were blowing out the home team in the eight-minute mark of the third period when disaster struck.
Christian Wood was leading the break and made a strong move to the cup. But he inadvertently stepped on Grizzlies guard Ja Morant's foot and grimaced in pain as he fell to the floor.
Replays showed just how badly Christian Wood rolled that already problematic ankle. He already missed some time this season due to the same injury. The 25-year-old slotman, who is enjoying a breakout year in his first season in H-Town, was carted off the court in a wheelchair. The extent of his injury remains unclear at the moment, but it certainly didn't look good for Rockets fans.
Before exiting the game prematurely, Christian Wood recorded 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field and 3-of-3 from deep. He also had seven boards, one assist, one steal, and one block in 20 minutes. Wood's possible long absence is a tough pill to swallow for Houston, who is starting to carve its identity as one of the best defensive-minded teams in the league right now. They have gone 10-10 prior to their match versus Memphis.
Christian Wood has been the driving force for them so far and is the early favorite for the Most Improved Player of the Year plum. Fingers crossed that he'll be back to 100 percent soon.
