Speaking on The Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday, Morey downplayed reported tension between James Harden and Chris Paul and said that he feels the Rockets are the team to beat in the Western Conference next season:
“We feel like we’re the favorites in the West going into next season and that should be the story,” said Morey.
Morey was responding to those who have been questioning the Rockets' style and wondering whether or not Houston can win a championship playing that way.
He stated that if you win 60 games (like the Rockets did during the 2017-18 campaign), then you can win a title and also said that Houston probably would have won 60 games again this season had they remained healthy.
Morey mentioned the Golden State Warriors as a team that people doubted years ago because they relied too heavily on the three-ball, and yet, they went on to win three championships.
That being said, with Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala, not to mention a lot of good role players, the Warriors' title teams in 2017 and 2018 had a heck of a lot more talent than any of Morey's squads in Houston have had, and unlike the Rockets who rely almost exclusively on iso ball, the Dubs move the ball a lot, so that doesn't seem like too apt of a comparison.
