RUMOR: Rockets had a trade to get James Harden, Russell Westbrook help fall through this week

Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Rockets

There was a potential trade this week that ultimately fell through involving the Houston Rockets and an unknown team, according to Kelly Iko of The Athletic.

Iko reports Houston didn’t initiate the trade talks:

In other words, Houston isn’t being aggressive on that front, at least before the season starts. From conversations with the front office, The Athletic learned that there was a potential trade this week that ultimately fell through, but the Rockets didn’t initiate the move. Rather, it was a team interested in dumping a player’s contract in Houston and attaching an asset to do so. The Rockets might have done it, even though it wasn’t for a rotational piece, but the opposing team eventually pulled back on its approach.

Houston opens its season on Thursday at home against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. The game will feature the last three MVP winners: Russell Westbrook, James Harden and Antetokounmpo.

The Rockets are expected to start Westbrook, Harden, Eric Gordon, PJ Tucker and Clint Capela. Houston is the only team in the NBA with two MVPs on the roster.

The Rockets’ brass is hoping Westbrook and Harden can co-exist on the court and lead Houston to a championship.
