The NBA regular season is still a couple of days away, but Houston Rockets superstar James Harden is already in mid-season form.

Harden went full throttle in their preseason finale against the Miami Heat and notched 44 points, five rebounds, seven assists, five steals and eight 3-pointers.

Harden didn't really need to go all-out in preseason, but Rockets head coach Mike D'Antoni said that his superstar guard is just wired that way.

“We can win games this way,” D’Antoni said, via Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle. “It’s just the way he is. He’ll do what it takes to win. Here’s a guy, he didn’t have to play. It’s preseason. He doesn’t have to start the season like this. But you know he wants to. He has that edge. He’s got that gene. Whenever he plays, he’s going to give us a chance. Whenever he plays, games or practice, he’s all business.

Harden is already picking up from where he left off last season. The 2017-18 MVP had a historically insane scoring campaign in 2018-19 en route to averaging 36.1 points per game for Houston.

As crazy as it sounds, Rockets head coach Mike D'Antoni believes Harden can ramp it up even further and notch close to 40 points a night with his constant improvement.

“Every year he gets better. Every year his scoring average goes up. If that continues, he’ll get up to close to 40. It’s what he does,” D'Antoni said.

Harden, 30, is still in the midst of his prime. The former Sixth Man of the Year has established himself as one of the most dynamic scorers in the history of the NBA.

His creativity in creating shots for himself, especially with his signature step back jumper, has greatly contributed to his success on the offensive end. Likewise, Harden has also mastered the art of drawing fouls and generating points from the free-throw line.

The NBA hasn't seen a player average over 40 point a contest since Wilt Chamberlain. Perhaps, Harden can become the first player in over half a century to accomplish that feat.
