Colorado Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon has elected to exercise his $21 million player option for the 2022 season, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.

Blackmon signed a six-year, $108 million contract extension with the Rockies in April 2018. The deal included this player option for the 2022 season, along with a $10 million player option for the 2023 campaign.

Blackmon is just coming off of a roller-coaster regular season with the Rockies. He did once again have his way at Coors Field, as he hit .283 and recorded 11 home runs in 75 home games. However, he did post lows not seen since his rookie campaign in numerous stats, which included his notable .305 BABIP.

There was much uncertainty as to whether he would go on to complete the season with Colorado. He was regularly in the rumor mill regarding a possible departure at the MLB trade deadline in July. As he does have a reported 15-team no-trade clause in his contract deal with the team, he wound up staying put past the July 30 trade deadline.

In the big picture, the Rockies may soon have notable gaps to fill across their roster, especially as the likes of Trevor Story and Jon Gray could become free agents. It remains to be seen on just how the Rockies will approach free agency following their 74-87 campaign last season.
