The New York Yankees are talking with the Arizona Diamondbacks about potentially acquiring starting pitcher Robbie Ray, with MLB reporter Peter Gammons stating that he has heard the Yankees could send outfielder Clint Frazier to the Diamondbacks in return. Meanwhile, Andy Martino of SNY reports that while New York is talking to Arizona about Ray, nothing is imminent.

The Yankees' interest in Ray comes as no surprise, as New York is in rather dire need for another starter. However, the market is drying up on the Yanks, as Marcus Stroman was traded to the New York Mets, and while the Mets do seem to be trying to trade Noah Syndergaard, they don't seem to have any intention of sending him to the Yankees. Plus, given the San Francisco Giants' recent surge, it appears that Madison Bumgarner is staying put.

That leaves Ray and not much else for the Yankees, which will obviously allow the Diamondbacks to raise their asking price.

Through 23 starts thus far this season, Ray has gone 9-7 with a 3.91 ERA, allowing 110 hits while striking out 173 batters over 129 innings of work. His peripherals are just so-so, as he owns a 4.26 FIP and a 2.98 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The 27-year-old was originally selected by the Washington Nationals in the seventh round of the 2012 MLB Draft but never actually played in a game for the Nationals' major-league club before being traded to the Detroit Tigers in June 2013.

Ray went on to make his big-league debut with the Tigers the following year, but his stint in Detroit didn't last long, as he was dealt to Arizona in December 2014.

The Brentwood, Tn. native, who made the All-Star team in 2017, owns a lifetime 4.02 ERA.
