Congratulations are in order to Savannah State University alumnus Shannon Sharpe! ESPN has agreed to a multi-year contract with Sharpe, expanding his role on the ESPN signature morning debate show, First Take, with Winston-Salem State alumnus Stephen A. Smith and host Molly Qerim. Sharpe expressed his sincerest gratitude to Smith during the announcement this morning.

“Stephen A., I know this moment is not possible without you. As you mentioned to me earlier, you have bosses, but you extended the olive branch and let them know that you wanted me to be a part of this family.”

Sharpe goes on to mention how Smith was there for him at his lowest point when he didn’t know the next direction of his career. Smith offered Sharpe comfort by letting him know that he had his back and that everything would be alright.

ESPN’s Head of Event & Studio Production, David Roberts, shared his thoughts on how Sharpe has been a pleasant addition to the show.

“Shannon Sharpe has been an incredible addition to the First Take team, enhancing the show’s dynamic with his engaging presence and insightful commentary,” he said. “Shannon’s chemistry with Stephen A. Smith has elevated our debates and been another key reason First Take is the premier destination for morning sports discussion.”

Sharpe who joined First Take last August will also see his role expand across the various other ESPN programs which will be announced at a later date. Sharpe’s positive contributions to the show are evident as First Take recently earned its 22nd consecutive month of year-over-year and most-view May ever.

“Being a part of this family has been a blessing. Everything about this relationship with ESPN, Stephen A., and First Take, has been tremendous,” said Sharpe. “I look forward to expanding my role and showing more of the world what I have to offer. The show goes on!”

Sharpe’s career as a media personality has grown tremendously over the last few years. In addition to this contact extension with ESPN, Sharpe hosts two popular podcasts. Club Shay Shay and Nightcap which he hosts with Chad Ochocinco Johnson and Gilbert Arenas.

With the new deal, Shape’s empire is certain to grow especially as the NFL season nears.
