Former Kentucky Wildcats star James Young will have to find another team to resuscitate his fledgling NBA career. According to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports, Young has been waived by the Philadelphia 76ers, meaning he will be free to look for a new NBA team assuming no one claims him before clearing the waivers.

Sources: The 76ers have released former first-round pick James Young, who was signed to a two-way contract in January.

Young was signed by the Sixers to a two-way contract back in January, though he mostly spent his time playing for Philadelphia’s G League affiliate. Young has played a total of 39 games in the 2017-18 G League season split between the Delaware 87ers and the Wisconsin Herd. Over that span, he posted 20.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. He was unable to carve a solid role in Philly, as the team already has JJ Redick and T.J McConnell performing well.

The Sixers also got back Markelle Fultz, so it’s very unlikely for Young to become even at least a peripheral contributor to the team had Philly opted to keep him.

James Young only played six games in the NBA during his short stint with the Sixers, averaging measly numbers of 2.8 points, 0.3 rebounds, and 0.3 assists while also shooting just 35.7 percent from the field.

A shifty 6-foot-6 shooting guard, Young could be a nice option for teams looking to improve their depth at the two-guard slot. Young, who was part of the 2013-14 Kentucky team that lost in the NCAA Tournament Finals, was taken by the Boston Celtics 17th overall in the 2014 NBA Draft. He suited up for the Celtics from 2014 to 2017, averaging just 2.3 points and 8.4 minutes in 89 total games in Boston.
