Saint-Etienne will not be in Ligue 1 next season after losing their qualification battle against Auxerre via penalty shootout. Their defeat marks the first time since 2004 that the club will be out of France's top flight, and the reaction from fans after the final whistle sounded was absolutely horrid. Rather than gracefully accept their defeat, Saint-Etienne supporters stormed the field and began wreaking havoc, going as far as to throw flares and fireworks in the direction of players fleeing towards the tunnel and back to the locker room. Fans immediately burst onto the pitch in a fit of rage, and you can see red flares being flung in the direction of players wearing the Saint-Etienne green kits as they're quickly ushered away from danger.

Auxerre defeated AS-Etienne 7-6 in penalty shootouts to secure their place in Ligue 1 next season. Etienne, on the other hand, is destined to play in Ligue 2, where they have not featured for nearly two decades. Joining Auxerre in promotion to Ligue 1 will be Toulouse and AC Ajaccio, while Metz, Bordeaux, and Saint-Etienne have all been dealt the brutal blow of relegation.

The wild scenes in the aftermath of the loss shows just how disgusted fans were with the club's performance this season. After placing 4th in the league just a few years ago, Etienne has struggled over the past few seasons, culminating in their relegation from Ligue 1 on Sunday. Still, the brazenly heinous action from fans has no place on a football pitch and hopefully, those involved will face dire consequences, as well as banishment from the grounds, permanently.

Etienne will likely release a statement regarding the incident after the loss, though it's just another major blemish on what has been a horrific season at the club.
