Following a dismal start to their season, Cincinnati has been slightly better, but the playoffs are a pipe dream at this point.</p><p>The NL Central has become a two-horse race between Milwaukee and St. Louis. Milwaukee is 58-49, one game out of both the division and Wild Card races. Milwaukee’s starting rotation is one of the best in the league. Sunday afternoon, Cincinnati will send Graham Ashcraft to the mound, a potential building block for the future. Ashcraft is 5-2 with a 4.12 ERA in 13 starts this season. Ashcraft has some of the best command in the game, with his 5.2% walk rate ranking in the 87th percentile. Even with elite velocity (97 mph average), Ashcraft’s cutter lacks bat-missing shape, so his command is important.</p><p>Cincinnati’s bullpen has struggled, ranking last with a 5.07 ERA. Alexis Diaz has been the lone bright spot, with a 1.99 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 40.2 innings. Diaz has electric stuff, ranking in the 97th percentile in whiff percentage.</p><p>As expected from a team 20 games under .500, Cincinnati’s offense has struggled. Their .239 batting average ranks 19th in the league, and their 102 home runs are good for 20th. Joey Votto is continuing his battle with Father Time, winning for the moment. Votto leads the team with 11 home runs and a .341 on-base percentage. The veteran first baseman has been on fire, hitting .381 in his last seven games, launching three home runs in that span. Kyle Farmer leads the team with 20 doubles and 51 RBI. Cincinnati’s offense was dealt a huge blow with Tyler Stephenson heading for surgery to stabilize a broken collarbone.</p><h2><b>Why The Brewers Could Cover The Spread</b></h2><p>Milwaukee is in an odd spot, trading away star closer Josh Hader while in the middle of playoff contention. Corbin Burnes, the team’s ace, will take the mound in this one with a 2.49 ERA in 21 starts. Burnes has struck out 166 batters in his 130 innings, a 32.3% strikeout rate that ranks in the 93rd percentile. Burnes’ lethal cutter, which he throws 55.5% of the time, averages 95 mph, and batters have managed just a .202 average against it.</p><p>Milwaukee’s bullpen is average, with a 4.00 ERA that ranks 18th in the league. Devin Williams, with a 1.74 ERA, is a perfect replacement for Hader, along with Taylor Rogers, who was acquired in the deal for Hader.</p><p>The Milwaukee offense is extremely powerful, with their 149 home runs the fourth-most in the league. Rowdy Tellez leads the team with 22 and has hit .455 in his last seven games. Tellez is even better at home, hitting 14 of his 22 home runs at American Family Field. Willy Adames has added 21 of his own, while Hunter Renfroe has bashed 19 home runs. Joey Votto, the incumbent first baseman, has hit 10 home runs this season and is on fire after a brutal start to the season. Votto has slashed .348/.483/.609 in his last seven games. Five of Votto’s 10 home runs have come in the last 30 games. Mike Moustakas, who has battled inconsistency this season, is hitting just .202 with six home runs this season. Kyle Farmer leads the team with 50 RBIs and has added 20 doubles. Cincinnati has only hit 98 home runs this season, tied for 20th in the league.</p><p>Tonight’s starting is Robert Dugger, who is making his first start of the season. Dugger has thrown just 12 innings this season in three appearances, one with Tampa Bay and two with Cincinnati. Dugger has experience starting, with 12 big-league starts under his belt. He has decent stuff, highlighted by his 17 strikeouts in 12 innings this season. Unfortunately, Cincinnati’s bullpen is the worst in baseball by a wide margin, with a 5.13 ERA. Alexis Diaz has been the lone bright spot in the bullpen, with a dominant 2.04 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 39.2 innings. Opposing batters have hit just .126 against Diaz.</p><h2><b>Why The Brewers Could Cover The Spread</b></h2><p>Milwaukee is a very good club, but are going through a tough stretch, losing four games in a row. There is no shortage of power for this team, with their 145 home runs being the fourth most in baseball. Willy Adames and Rowdy Tellez pace the team in that category, both have slugged 21. Hunter Renfroe, added from the Red Sox in the offseason, has mashed 19 home runs. An interesting aspect of this offense is their speed, as Christian Yelich (15), Kolten Wong (11), and Jace Peterson (10) all have double-digit totals. Milwaukee’s 65 steals as a team rank tenth in the league.</p><p>Eric Lauer has parlayed his 2021 career year into another strong campaign in 2022. Lauer is 7-3 with a 3.75 ERA in his 19 starts this season. Batters have hit under .200 against both Lauer’s fastball and his slider, which he combines to throw over 66% of the time. Lauer is even better at home, with a 2.85 ERA in his eight home starts. In his lone start against Cincinnati this season, Lauer was victorious despite surrendering four runs in 6.1 innings. After a shaky series in Pittsburgh, Milwaukee’s bullpen ERA ranks 18th in baseball with a 3.99 ERA in 374 innings. Star closer Josh Hader no longer wears this uniform, but Devin Williams, with a 1.77 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 40.2 innings, is a more than capable replacement. It’s only natural that he felt some level of nervousness or anxiety when heading out to join his new team, but it’s certainly great to hear that those feelings diminished shortly after he arrived in his new city.</p><p>Once he’s fully settled in Minnesota, Mahle will look to help the Twins fend off their AL Central rivals and make a push for the postseason.</p><p>A six-year MLB veteran, Mahle debuted for the Reds in 2017 and has since made 114 appearances for the team. His numbers were outstanding and he began the season 11-0. But he also has the luxury of pitching with a lead quite often as the Dodgers boast one of the most potent lineups in all of baseball.</p><p>Meanwhile, Alcantara is playing in Miami. That has not stopped him from having an incredible breakout season though. After his latest gem, Alcantara is now the proud owner of a <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/stats/_/id/35241/sandy-alcantara">1.88 ERA</a> with a 0.93 WHIP and 144 strikeouts in 158 1/3 innings.</p><p>There are a number of pitchers in the National League that are also having a fantastic season. 2021 NL Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes is among those trying to chase down Alcantara. They have an overall record of 42-61 as they now sit in third place in the NL Central, 15.0 games behind the Brewers. They’ll be starting Mike Minor on the hill tonight as he’s been pitching pretty well lately despite his numbers of a 1-7 record with a 6.31 ERA. The Reds will look to back him up tonight with some offensive help.</p><h2><b>Why The Marlins Could Cover The Spread</b></h2><p>The Marlins are also likely out of the playoffs this season but decided to hold strong and not trade away their ace pitcher, Sandy Alcantara, who will be starting for them on the mound tonight. The Marlins are 47-57 on the season but are 18.5 games back from the Mets for the lead in the NL East. Alcantara is a much-deserved All-Star as (mark my words) he will be a Cy Young winner at some point in his career. He’s been pitching fantastically so far as he is 9-4 on the season with a 1.99 ERA. As long as he can keep the hits to a minimum, the Marlins have a good chance of winning this game.</p><h2><b>Final Reds-Marlins Prediction &amp; Pick</b></h2><p>The Marlins are missing a lot of key players due to injury and even though they have their ace on the mound tonight, I don’t really think it will make much of a difference. The Reds have been finding ways to win ball games and on the other side, the Marlins have been finding ways to lose ball games. The Minnesota Twins are leading the pack currently, but the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox are both within two games of the Twins for the top spot in the AL Central. The issue is that, given the ultra competitive state of the AL wild card race, whichever two teams come short in the Central may end up missing the playoffs entirely.</p><p>The Twins are doing their best to ensure that they are not that team, and made a big move at the 2022 MLB trade deadline to help them accomplish that goal. They swung a deal with the Cincinnati Reds that netted them young starter Tyler Mahle in return for a trio of prospects (infielder Spencer Steer, third baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand, and left handed pitcher Steve Hajjar)</p><p>Minnesota’s starting rotation has been iffy all season long, but they went a long way in improving it by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-trade-deadline-news-twins-get-tyler-mahle-from-reds/">acquiring Mahle</a> here. With the trade officially in the books, let’s take a closer look at the deal and see who came out on top.</p><h2><b>Grading the Tyler Mahle trade</b></h2><p><b>Minnesota Twins</b></p><p>The Twins have largely made it through the initial stage of the 2022 season without an ace leading their rotation. They have some solid arms leading the way, but Sonny Gray has the lowest ERA of the group, and while a 3.48 ERA is nothing to laugh at, it’s not ace-like stuff either.</p><p>That’s not to say that Mahle is an ace himself (he has a 4.40 ERA), but he figures to round out a deep Twins rotation that doesn’t have a true ace. And maybe that’s not a bad thing. In a potential postseason series, Minnesota appears set to be able to run out a solid starting pitcher each time they take the field. Sometimes that’s better than having one star and a bunch of scrubs behind him.</p><p>Mahle is appealing, not only because he has top-end stuff as a starter, but he’s also fairly young at just 27 years old, and is under team control through the 2023 season. So the Twins got themselves a guy who will help them in 2022, and potentially the future as well.</p><p>It’s also worth noting that the haul of prospects Minnesota gave up here isn’t super steep. None of the guys were among the top 100 prospects in the MLB, which could end up making this deal an even bigger steal for the Twins in the future if they end up not panning out in the majors.</p><p><b>Final Grade: A-</b></p><p>Mahle wasn’t the best pitcher available, but considering the circumstances surrounding him, he was one of the most enticing options. He will join a Twins team that is much better than the Reds squad he is leaving, and that should help his numbers improve. This also doesn’t appear to be a rental for Minnesota, and if Tyler Mahle can establish himself as a consistent part of their rotation for years to come, this could look even better than it already does.</p><p><b>Cincinnati Reds</b></p><p>Just a few seasons after looking like they were going to try to establish themselves as a contender, the Reds are back to the drawing board staring down a rebuild. It wasn’t surprising to see them unload Mahle here despite his upside, and it looks like they got some solid prospects in return for him.</p><p>Steer is the top prospect going back to Cincy in this deal, and was <a href="https://twinsdaily.com/news-rumors/twins-minor-league/spencer-steer-matt-wallner-will-represent-twins-in-futures-game-r12633/">selected to the Futures Game</a> this season. He has struggled since getting promoted to triple-A this season, though, which could be a cause for concern in the future.</p><p>Encarnacion-Strand has some power potential, and recently earned a promotion to double-A after mashing 20 home runs in high-A this season, but has struggled at third base in the field. Hajjar was a 2021 second round pick, but it’s still too early to make any judgements about how good he could become given how little he has played so far.</p><p>It’s not a bad package, but considering how Mahle is still young and under team control past the 2022 season, it leaves much to be desired. The Twins sold high on a couple of guys having good seasons, and the Reds are going to have to hope that they develop, otherwise this will look pretty bad on their end.</p><p><b>Final Grade: C-</b></p><p>It’s hard to be overly excited about this deal from the Reds perspective considering what they gave up in Mahle. He’s not the greatest pitcher ever, but he probably should have drawn a higher rated prospect to lead the package, or another young prospect to fill out the Reds farm system. The return pales in comparison to what they got for Luis Castillo, and it feels like Cincinnati probably could have gotten more for Tyler Mahle here.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Minnesota’s starters also sport a mere 4.24 FIP, also 18th overall in the big leagues.</p><p>Apart from Tyler Mahle, the Twins also netted Baltimore Orioles reliever and All-Star closer Jorge López in a separate deal. Moreover, the Twins acquired Michael Fulmer from the Detroit Tigers just before the trade deadline. The newest Twins hurler did wonders for his trade value in June and July, pitching to 2.94 and 3.71 ERAs in the months, respectively.</p><p>Mahle had been placed on the injured list with a shoulder strain at the beginning of July, though it clearly didn’t affect his MLB trade deadline value much.</p><p>The Twins, who don’t have a ton of rotation depth behind the likes of Joe Ryan and Sonny Gray, get a legitimate no. 2/3-ish starter in Mahle.</p><p>Minnesota is in the midst of what is shaping up to be an exciting race for the American League Central crown. A free agent at the end of the season, Pham is due to be paid $7.5 million in the 2022 season.</p><p>He’ll join a Red Sox outfield that includes Jarren Duran, Alex Verdugo and Jackie Bradley Jr. It’s a group that was certainly in need of an upgrade, particularly on the offensive end, as none of the trio has been adept with the bat this season.</p><p>Pham’s .694 OPS would represent the highest mark among Red Sox outfielders. With seven stolen bases, the former Cincinnati outfielder also brings some speed to the Boston outfield ahead of the August 2 MLB trade deadline.</p><p>Red Sox executive Chaim Bloom had pushed back on the notion that the Red Sox would be sellers at the deadline. Reports had also indicated that the club would do a bit of buying and selling.</p><p>As it turns out, the Red Sox’ first two deals of the deadline, involving Christian Vazquez and Tommy Pham, were trades made as buyers <i>and </i>sellers.</p><p>Just 3.5 games back of a Wild Card spot, Boston seems to think they aren’t fully out of the race yet. He’s pitching a 3-12 record with a 5.59 ERA so far but has some promise in his future. Greene has an extremely fast fastball for a starting pitcher but uses it almost too much. He’ll be looking for some help behind him in the field if he wants to get another win under his belt tonight.</p><h2><b>Why The Marlins Could Cover The Spread</b></h2><p>The Marlins have not been playing very well lately, and it shows in the standings. They’ve dropped to fourth in the NL East with an overall record of 47-55 but are still 17.5 games back from the first-place Mets. They’re mainly looking to sell some top assets at the deadline and will likely be looking more towards the future rather than the present. The biggest problem for the Marlins this season (mainly the past month) has been injuries to their best players such as Garrett Cooper, Jazz Chrisholm, etc. Starting on the mound tonight for the Marlins will be Jesus Luzardo, who is making his first start since early May. He’s 2-3 on the season with a 4.03 ERA. Over, the O’s are 51-50, but are still sitting in fourth place in the AL East, 17.5 games behind the Yankees. It’s tough to imagine an Orioles team that has come so far to end up likely with a plus .500 record and still not make the playoffs. But that won’t stop them from trying their best. Starting on the mound for the O’s today will be Austin Voth, making his 7th start in 11 appearances this season where he is pitching a 1-1 record and 6.15 ERA. Not his best performances as of late, but the Birds are looking to keep the momentum rolling and make this second half of the season count.</p><h2><b>Why The Reds Could Cover The Spread</b></h2><p>The Reds have been playing very good baseball since May after their historically bad start to the season. Because of that bad start, they sit at the bottom of the NL Central division with a record of 39-61, 17.5 games back from the Brewers. Even though the Reds have been playing well recently, they’re still looking to sell some of their key assets at the trade deadline, specifically all-star pitcher Luis Castillo. Until then, they’ll continue to rebuild and hopefully we’ll see them in contention again soon. Starting on the mound for the Reds tonight will be Tyler Mahle, as he is pitching a 3-3 record with a 4.73 ERA. For what the Reds are doing on offense lately, he’ll try to hold down the fort and get a victory today.</p><h2><b>Final Orioles-Reds Prediction &amp; Pick</b></h2><p>Objectively, the Orioles have been the better all-around team so far this season compared to the Reds. With that said, this matchup doesn’t really look great for either of them. The Reds won pretty handily last night, but I’m not as confident in them tonight. With that said, I’m also not that confident in the Orioles either. Because of that, and how the starter pitchers line up, I’m going to take the over in this one. With that said, it’s a good time to check out our <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/betting/">MLB odds series</a>, which includes our Orioles-Reds prediction and pick we have laid out below.</p><p>Baltimore continues to be the darlings of the American League, with a 51-49 record good for fourth in the AL East. Still, trades are coming, with fan favorite Trey Mancini likely to depart. The Cinderella story may just strike midnight in the next week, but what a run it has been.</p><p>If Baltimore is a feel-good story, Cincinnati could not be more opposite. The gutting of their 38-61 team has begun, with Tyler Naquin heading to the Mets and Luis Castillo bringing a king’s ransom from Seattle. Trey Mancini, who has spent his career with Baltimore, is likely to be traded and would bring a .272 average and 1o home runs with him to his new club. Still, Mancini is an Oriole for the time being and can impact games offensively. In addition, Adley Rutschman, the former number one pick, has dominated since making his debut. Rutschman ranks first amongst catchers with a .422 OBP in the month of July (per Alex Fast). This is not to say that Baltimore’s offense should be feared, but this is not the Orioles of old that would roll over at any sign of a challenge. A slow, painful rebuild has begun to bear some fruit here.</p><p>Dean Kremer will be the starter tonight for Baltimore. Kremer has been solid in his limited work, posting a 3.06 ERA in nine starts. Even with his previous two poor starts (7 ER in 9.1 innings), Kremer has a puny 2.87 ERA in his last seven starts. Kremer should be able to bounce back today, but should he falter, Baltimore’s bullpen is one to count on. Even with the third most innings, the bullpen ranks third in baseball with a 2.99 ERA. First-year closer and first-time All-Star Jorge Lopez (1.68 ERA, 19 saves) has been the headliner. Towering rookie set-up man Felix Bautista has used his 100 mph fastball to hold opponents to a 1.50 ERA while striking out 11.8 per nine. Keegan Aiken, Dillon Tate, and Cionel Perez are the other main weapons in this stacked bullpen.</p><h2><b>Why The Reds Could Cover The Spread</b></h2><p>Make sure before any bets are placed on Cincinnati that Tyler Mahle, tonight’s starter, is still suiting up for them. Mahle has been another trade subject but will take his 4.48 ERA to the mound for possibly the last time as a Red. Mahle has been great in his last seven starts, with a 3.22 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 44.2 innings. His recent stretch has contenders that will miss on bigger names salivating. Cincinnati owns baseball’s worst ERA at 5.18, while the bullpen’s mark is upped to 5.26.</p><p>Offensively, things are not much better. Cincinnati is hitting .240 as a team, 18th in baseball, and that is one of their better categories. Other than Brandon Drury (19 home runs) and Tommy Pham (11 home runs), no Reds batter has reached double-digit home runs. Soon, Pham may be the only legitimate power threat, as Drury’s versatility and newfound hitting prowess makes him expendable for a bad club. Joey Votto is slowly emerging from his terrible beginning to the season, hitting his ninth home run of the season last night. Still, there just is not enough firepower to count on this offense. Mahle will need to take this game by himself for much hope to be had.</p><h2><b>Final Orioles-Reds Prediction &amp; Pick</b></h2><p>It’s baseball so anything can happen I guess. The New York Yankees were one of the many teams interested in trading for the All-Star but couldn’t bring him in.</p><p>The main reason why Castillo isn’t bound for The Bronx is that the Yankees were not willing to trade their top prospect, Anthony Volpe. Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that New York made it clear that the young shortstop was untouchable in a Castillo</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">The Yankees told the Reds from the outset of talks on Castillo that they would not include Anthony Volpe. Castillo only has one more year of team control after this year and New York has a dire need for a good shortstop.</p><p>Holding onto Volpe for other trades — perhaps for someone like Shohei Ohtani —  also makes sense for New York but their preference seems to be holding onto him and having him come up to the big leagues one day. He has showcased <a href="https://twitter.com/RyanGarciaESM/status/1552990080469458947?s=20&amp;t=afyMUx1uvyZb3CIQFHMALA">a lot of potential</a> but may not be ready for at least another year.</p><p>New York is looking to improve so that it can take advantage of Aaron Judge’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-aaron-judge-sets-another-ridiculous-record-not-seen-since-2001-with-40th-home-run/">outstanding season</a>. Trading Volpe is their best bet to improve but they should make sure they get the right piece in return.</p><p>The Yankees are still determined to add a pitcher before the trade deadline. Let’s breakdown this blockbuster deal between the Mariners and Reds.</p><h2><b>Grading Mariners-Reds Luis Castillo trade deadline deal</b></h2><p><b>What the Reds gave up</b></p><p>Luis Castillo had been the Reds ace for a few years. He’d been a member of the team since 2017, but officially emerged as a star in 2019 when he struck out 226 batters and posted a 3.40 ERA. Castillo has posted an ERA under 4 in each year since, but is arguably in the midst of his best season right now.</p><p>Castillo currently owns a 2.86 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP. He’s holding opposing hitters to a .201 batting average and has 90 strikeouts on the season. As a result, Castillo was selected to the All-Star game.</p><p>He features a versatile pitch arsenal with an absolutely filthy change-up. The Reds loved what they had in Castillo, but are in a rebuilding phase so trading him was the best course of action.</p><p><b>What the Mariners gave up</b></p><p>The Mariners sent a haul back to Cincinnati. <a href="https://twitter.com/jonmorosi/status/1553207880169525248">MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported</a> that Seattle sent prospects Noelvi Marte, Levi Stoudt, Andrew Moore, and Edwin Arroyo to the Reds. Marte was the Reds No. 1 prospect, while Arroyo was No. 3 and Stoudt was No. 5.</p><p>This deal likely removes the Mariners from Juan Soto consideration. They would have needed to send the Nationals a package highlighted by Noelvi Marte, who is one of the better prospects in all of baseball. But the Mariners clearly believe in Luis Castillo.</p><p>Marte, a 6’1 shortstop, has impressive tools. He has plenty of natural pop in his bat to go along with a quality hit tool. Many expect him to develop into an All-Star caliber offensive player at the big league level. He is a candidate to move to third base at some point, but he isn’t a bad defender at shortstop.</p><p>But his offense is what stands out.</p><p>Arroyo, also a shortstop, is a plus defender with impressive offensive ability as well. Stoudt is a left-handed pitcher who features a mid-high 90’s fastball and a tremendous splitter. Andrew Moore is a right-handed pitcher who offers high velocity but needs to work on control.</p><p><b>Grading the trade</b></p><p>So who won the trade?</p><p>I would say both teams came away with wins in this deal. On paper, the Reds got a loaded return package for Castillo. It is possible that Seattle only has the right-hander for a year and a half since Castillo will be a free agent following next season.</p><p>The Reds got 3 of the Mariners top 5 prospects which fits perfectly into their rebuilding strategy.</p><p>With all of that being said, I don’t blame Seattle for going all in on Luis Castillo. The Mariners are desperate to snap their MLB leading playoff drought. This is a franchise that couldn’t afford to stand pat. They needed to swing a big deal and they got a star pitcher.</p><p>Did they overpay? Maybe. But they had to out-bid teams such as the Yankees and Dodgers to acquire the right-handed ace. The Bronx Bombers have already moved on, it seems.</p><p>A new report from <a href="https://twitter.com/JonHeyman/status/1553208042191192064" rel="noopener">Jon Heyman of the New York Post</a> indicates the team is now focused on Oakland Athletics’ starter Frankie Montas. The Yankees are also looking at other pitchers, including Pittsburgh Pirates hurler Jose Quintana.</p><p>The Yankees have sought an upgrade to their rotation throughout the second half of the season. Jameson Taillon sports an ERA over 5.00, and Jordan Montgomery’s ERA is near 5.00.</p><p>The Yankees have gotten fine performances out of Nestor Cortes. Cortes was an All-Star in 2022 but isn’t able to carry the rotation on his own.</p><p>Montas, 29, has heard his name in the rumor mill since the beginning of the season. The Oakland hurler has come into his own the last couple of seasons. Last year, he won 13 games and pitched to a 3.37 ERA while striking out 207.</p><p>Montas has missed some time with injuries this season. And the Athletics are one of the worst teams in baseball with a 39-63 record.</p><p>Despite this, the Yankees target has pitched well. He is 4-9 with a 3.18 ERA in 19 starts. He has struck out 109 batters while walking just 28.</p><p>The 33-year-old Quintana has experienced a bit of a career renaissance in Pittsburgh. Once one of the better pitchers in the game, he has struggled the last few seasons.</p><p>In 2022, the veteran is 3-5 with a 3.18 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 97.1 innings. He is on pace for his best season since 2016.</p><p>The Yankees clearly want to upgrade their rotation. In fact, all five starters right now have ERAs anywhere from 3.50 to 3.90. That’s consistency.</p><p>As for Castillo, he has been one of the lone bright spots in Cincy. The hard-throwing righty is 4-4 with a stellar 2.86 ERA in 14 starts, striking out 90 batters in 85 innings of work. The 29-year-old also has a 1.07 WHIP.</p><p>The Mariners are in the heart of the Wild Card race, too, and just finished up an insane 14-game winning streak. This ballclub is playing tremendous baseball in July and there is no question Castillo should continue his success in the Pacific Northwest. Subsequently, the interleague play did not start until the 90s and these teams never met in the World Series. The Orioles lead the all-time head-to-head 8-4. Also, Baltimore won the last series they played against Cincinnati in 2017, winning two of three. </p><p>The Orioles are coming off a series where they took three of four from the Tampa Bays. Additionally, they are 5-5 over their past 10 games. The Reds are coming off a series where they split a four-game set with the Miami Marlins. Notably, they had the lead in the ninth inning yesterday and could not hold on. The Reds are also 5-5 over 10 games. </p><p>The Orioles do not have a starting pitcher announced, but it is looking like they might go with Dean Kremer on the mound. Kremer is 3-2 with a 3.06 ERA. Recently, he tossed 5 1/3 innings while allowing four earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Meanwhile, Mike Minor will be the guy going for the Reds. Minor is having a bad season, as he is 1-7 with a 6.65 ERA. The misery has continued this month, as Minor has gone 0-3 with a 5.31 ERA across four starts. Baltimore is 50-48 and three games behind in the wildcard race. Consequently, it has been solid pitching that has kept them in the race, as they have the third-best bullpen in the league. The Orioles’ relievers have helped reduce the strain on a rotation that is not there yet. </p><p>Trey Mancini continues to excel for the Orioles, as he is batting .268 with nine home runs, 38 RBIs, and 36 runs. Likewise, he is 2 for 9 against Minor in his career. Mancini will look to improve his mark against the Reds, where he is batting .167 (1 for 6) against the Big Red Machine. He contributed to yesterday’s win, going 2 for 4 with a home run. </p><p>The Orioles’ offense ranks 24th in batting average, 24th in on-base percentage, 21st in runs, 15th in home runs, and 19th in slugging percentage. Thus, the O’s will need the offense to spike up to have a chance. </p><p>The Orioles will cover the spread if they get a good game from their starting pitcher. Additionally, Baltimore must continue to excel on the backend. The hitters will need to produce more than three runs to cover the spread. </p><h2><b>Why The Reds Could Cover The Spread</b></h2><p>The Reds do not have much, but they can cause damage when their batters are on the same wavelength. Tommy Pham went 3 for 5 yesterday with two RBIs. Also, Tyler Naquin contributed by going 1 for 3 with a two-run home run. It was one of those nights where the offense produced enough to win, but the bullpen could not hold the lead. Pham is batting .245 with 11 home runs, 39 RBIs, and 57 runs. Subsequently, he leads the team in walks, as he has gotten a free base 40 times. Naquin is now batting .246 with seven home runs, 33 RBIs, and 29 runs. However, his play is inconsistent. Naquin must garner some streak to gain consistency. </p><p>The Reds rank 16th in batting average, 20th in on-base percentage, 16th in runs, 21st in home runs, and 23rd in slugging percentage. Their bats must come through and provide Cincinnati with a large lead to take Baltimore out of the fold. </p><p>The Reds will cover the spread if Minor can give them a quality start. Cincinnati needs five to six innings from their starter and would prefer him to allow three or fewer runs. Additionally, the Reds must score. They managed six runs yesterday and it still was not enough to win. The good news is that Baltimore’s offense is inconsistent, so six runs might be enough to get the job done. </p><p><b>Final Orioles-Reds Prediction &amp; Pick</b></p><p>The Orioles have hope for the first time in years while the Reds continue to flounder. Thus, it is easy to go with the Orioles because of the momentum they are riding. After years of missing the playoffs, the team has barged their way to the top of the NL East division. Off the backs of their stellar pitching and their offseason haul, they are looking poised to take the top spot of the division.</p><p>However, trouble looms behind the team. The Atlanta Braves weathered their championship hangover and have been steadily gaining on the Mets’ top spot. What was once a healthy lead has been whittled down to a three-game difference. They cannot afford to be complacent. Because of that, the Mets are making a trade ahead of the deadline.</p><p>The Mets have acquired LHP Phillip Diehl and outfield Tyler Naquin from the Cincinnati Reds in a trade. In return, NY sent over a couple of unnamed minor leaguers at the moment. It’s not exactly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-new-yorks-mlb-trade-deadline-plans-after-brutal-bullpen-blow/">a flashy move</a>, but it’s a solid move to solidify their depth ahead of a tight postseason race. The pitcher was placed in Triple-A for most of the season, and figures to stay there after the trade. On the other hand, though, Naquin will provide a solid rotational boost to their outfield.</p><p>The Mets’ outfield boasts three hitters batting at an above-average rate. However, should one of Starling Marte, Brandon Nimmo, and Mark Canha go down, they’ll need a reliable back-up option. Naquin figures to be that guy for them: not exactly a star name, but is enough to not be completely bad in the playoffs.</p><p>With their talent in the pitching department, the Mets don’t need excellence from their hitters night in and night out. This is perhaps one of the most well-rounded teams in the MLB today, and they’ll be a terrifying matchup for any team in the National League.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
