Gregg Popovich has become the first NBA head coach to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. He got the first dose on his birthday on Thursday. The legendary San Antonio Spurs tactician partnered with NBA Cares for a PSA to encourage others to do the same as well.
“I’m going to get the COVID-19 vaccine shot. It will keep me safe, keep my family safe and keep other people safe. Wearing masks is important and to get the vaccine does give you an added level of assurance. Science-wise, it’s a no-brainer. It’s the right thing to do so we can all get on track again. Let’s do this together,” Pop said in the clip, which was shared by the Spurs' official social media accounts.

Gregg Popovich, who just turned 72 as the architect of the Spurs' rise to greatness, is the oldest coach in the league right now and the oldest coach in NBA history. His advanced age puts him in the high-risk category for the viral disease, making him one of the first ones eligible to get the shot.
The multi-titled tactician has long been vocal about his fear for the virus, and has been a staunch supporter of the league's strict health and safety protocols. The league, meanwhile, remains split in its stance about having players on the Spurs and other teams receive the vaccine. NBPA Executive Director Michele Roberts has admitted that some players are hesitant, while others want it as soon as possible. The vaccine is slowly being rolled across the nation, so older coaches and staff are prioritized at the moment.
Moreover, the players union has reportedly agreed not to make the vaccine mandatory for athletes. However, those who opt not to receive the vaccine would continue to face travel restrictions and should avoid close contact gatherings in their spare time. Gregg Popovich, meanwhile, is certainly one of the most influential figures in the league (not just on the Spurs) right now. Others, for sure, will follow his lead and receive the vaccine as well.
