Head coach Gregg Popovich addressed the media for the first time since his wife's passing, immediately addressing the recent trade that sent San Antonio Spurs star Kawhi Leonard and sharpshooter Danny Green packing.

The Spurs traded Leonard and Green for swingman DeMar DeRozan, center Jakob Poeltl and a first-round pick in next year's draft, protected from slates 1-20.

“I couldn’t be happier,” said Popovich, according to Tim Bontemps of The Washington Post. “I think this trade is going to work out great for both teams.”

“Kawhi is not going to stop being a great player. But we’re thrilled with DeMar. To get back a proven NBA player and a proven All-Star, we have to be thrilled.”

The Spurs rarely ever make trades, usually extending their players or allowing them to hit free agency after their deals expire — making this a rather uncommon situation they have to deal with.

DeRozan has proven to be a coachable player, having undergone a recent change at the offensive front under last season's coach Dwane Casey, which resulted in a career-high 5.2 assists per game.

The Compton native has also proven a very capable scoring punch off the bench for Team USA, which will give Popovich another way to get acquainted with his new star, hopefully turning the page on the Kawhi Leonard era.
