Manu Ginobili spent the entirety of his 16-year career with the San Antonio Spurs, helping to lead the team to four NBA championships and a vast array of legendary postseason moments.

Now, for the 2021-22 NBA season, Ginobili is back with the Spurs organization that he helped make one of the most respected in all of sports as a Special Adviser to Basketball Operations.

On Spurs Media Day, longtime Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich detailed exactly what Ginobili’s role will be with the team, with trademark Popovich veracity and wit:

Via Pounding The Rock:

“Whatever he wants,” said Popovich of his former Spurs star turned colleague. “He’s going to do everything. He’s going to help (general manager) Brian (Wright) in management. He’s going to help me with coaching. He’s going to help the players with development. He’s probably going to go scout some people.

“I think he’s probably going to figure out a two-week trip to Italy to scout foreign players,” the Spurs coach said partly in jest. “I’ll go with him . . but I’m being serious, he’s going to do all those things and see where he feels comfortable. It’s just great to have him in the program for all kinds of reasons, but mainly because we love the guy, and he’s Manu Ginobili, so who wouldn’t want to have him around?”

Ginobili’s role with the team follows his teammate Tim Duncan’s, who was an assistant coach with the Spurs in the 2019-20, but Ginobili is expected to remain in the front office for far longer than Duncan did – who only joined the coaching staff because Popovich needed someone he trusted in that role.

A two-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA selection, Ginobili will look to help secure the Spurs’ future behind young talents such as Lonnie Walker, Derrick White, Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, Luka Samanic, Dejounte Murray, Josh Primo and others.
