San Antonio Spurs point guard Dejounte Murray has come a long way since getting drafted in 2016 and is on the cusp of a breakout season.

After he was anointed as the team’s starting point guard midway through last season, Murray drastically improved his averages to 10.1 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.6 steals per game on 45.2 percent shooting from the field. His rebounding and swiping ability, as well as his knack to drive to the basket were all on full display as the Spur’s lead floor general.

This promotion, though, has not stopped the young player from rounding out his game.

According to Spurs beat writer Tom Orsborn, team elder statesman Rudy Gay has lauded Murray for his leadership and growth into becoming their team's “anchor on defense.”

Standing 6-foot-5 with long limbs and a 6-foot-9 wingspan, he has all the tools to be a tormenting defender. Playing within a system created by Gregg Popovich will only add to his talents and experiences as a basketball player.

Ultimately, it’s great to hear him taking great strides in his progress. After losing Tony Parker to free agency, Manu Ginobili to retirement, and Lonnie Walker IV to a meniscus tear, more will be asked out of the third-year player, especially on the defensive end.

After much drama has filled this past off-season, the Spurs will lean heavily on Murray, DeMar DeRozan, and LaMarcus Aldridge as the team’s new big three to take them back to the promised land. Having Dejounte Murray reaching his prime will go a long way in helping them reach their championship aspirations.
