Puerto Rico and other countries near the Caribbean Islands have been slammed with two of the most destructive hurricanes in history. Hurricane Irma did more than enough damage, and now Hurricane Maria came to wreck more havoc. Now, the newest member of the Oklahoma City Thunder Carmelo Anthony is making it his mission to help the people of Puerto Rico rebuild, by starting with a $50,000 donation.

“I’m half Puerto Rican, and I’m proud of it,” Anthony said on the Players Tribune. “Puerto Ricans are my people. But this is about more than that. Puerto Ricans are our fellow Americans. Puerto Ricans are our fellow man. They need our help.”

This situation is terrifying to even conceive, and the families affected must endure the nightmare that ensues from communication technology ceasing to exist after the inclement weather destroyed everything in its wake.

“I’ve been texting my people down there for the past 24 hours, and I get nothing back,” continued Anthony “It’s the worst feeling in the world. Imagine texting somebody you love and getting no response for more than a day. It’s been days of nothing, and I’m sitting here on pins and needles.”

It's incredibly unfortunate how much damage these hurricanes have caused to the good people of Puerto Rico. They need just as much help as Florida, Houston, and the other surrounding cities in Texas.

“I know to a lot of people reading the news, it’s just a headline,” Anthony also said. “It’s just another disaster. But man, if you’ve ever been to Puerto Rico, you already know the spirit of the people. The joy of those kids. The energy and good vibes you feel the minute you step on the island.”
