On Friday, Minnesota Twins fans found themselves witnessing a sight they've seen far too often over the past few years. Star center fielder Byron Buxton, who had just rocketed a leadoff double to open up the game, pulled up lame after reaching second base with an apparent leg injury. Buxton, who is extremely injury prone, was removed from the game immediately after lacing the two-base hit and did not return.

Buxton underwent testing on his injured knee, the results of which were relatively good news for the club. According to Ken Rosenthal, Buxton has no structural damage in his knee, meaning he's avoided a long stint on the IL. In fact, Rosenthal indicates it shouldn't be much more than a week until the speedy outfielder makes his way back into the lineup.

When healthy, Buxton is one of baseball's best five-tool players. He's an elite baserunner and fielder, hits for contact, and can absolutely crush the ball, too. In 2021, multiple injuries limited Buxton to just 61 games. When on the field, however, the Twins' star's numbers were tremendous. He slashed .306/.358/.647 with 19 home runs, 32 RBI, 23 doubles, and 9 stolen bases. Across a 162-game season, those numbers would have equated to 50 home runs, 85 RBI, 61 doubles, and 24 steals.

While the knee injury will cost Buxton a bit of time, it's far better news than Twins fans were likely expecting when he went down in pain in the first inning against the Boston Red Sox on Friday.

He's likely set to miss the remainder of the Twins' series against Boston. He could potentially return for the series against the Kansas City Royals, though the team may hold him out until they return home for the Twins' three-game set with the White Sox in late April.
