The Detroit Lions parted ways with longtime running back Ameer Abdullah earlier this week. It appears the Minnesota Vikings were quick to jump on the opportunity of bringing him in.

It is no secret that Minnesota has had some trouble producing a consistent rushing attack in the 2018 NFL season.According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, they have claimed Abdullah off waivers:

Vikings claimed former Lions RB Ameer Abdullah in waivers, per source.

Ameer Abdullah had been the top option in the Lions' backfield over the last several years. His versatile skill set as both a runner and receiver made him an ideal fit in their pass-heavy offense over the years. However, it is clear that a new era began when head coach Matt Patricia took prior to the 2018 campaign. He has since surrendered lead back duties to Kerryon Johnson and LeGarrette Blount this year. As a result, he has hardly seen the field.

It seems he still did enough over the years to make an impression on Detroit's fellow NFC North rival. The Vikings have suddenly transitioned to a more pass-heavy offense with the arrival of quarterback Kirk Cousins. However, their lackluster rushing attack can largely be attributed to the absence of running back Dalvin Cook.

Fortunately, Cook was finally able to make his return after missing four straight games due to injury. It is safe to assume that he will lead the backfield moving forward. However, there is a very good chance for Abdullah to compete with running back Latavius Murray for a role on passing downs.
