Mike Zimmer's coaching staff will undergo an overhaul in the 2020 offseason. One day after their season-ending loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round, the Minnesota Vikings saw offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski choose to become the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns. Now, their defensive coordinator will be leaving.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Vikings defensive coordinator George Edwards is not expected to return next season.

Edwards has acted as the Vikings' defensive coordinator since 2014. Since his arrival, Minnesota has fielded one of the NFL's consistently better defenses. Under Edwards, with much say from Zimmer, the Vikings have run a 4-3 defense that favors aggressive play-calls and constant disguises.

However, in 2019, the Vikings' defense didn't play up to par. They ranked as the NFL's 14th-best yardage defense, allowing 341.6 per game. They weren't necessarily awful, though, as they allowed just 18.9 points per game, fifth in the NFL.

George Edwards, 58, should be regarded as a potential hire elsewhere. He previously coached as a defensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins in 2003 and a defensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills from 2010 to 2011.

For the Vikings, meanwhile, it's fair to wonder if Zimmer will take over defensive playcalling or if they will promote from within. Defensive line coach Andre Patterson, defensive backs coach Jerry Gray and linebackers coach Adam Zimmer, Mike's son, could all be potential options to fill the void of Edwards.

Whoever coaches the Vikings defense in 2020 will have a talented unit to work on, as they have talented starters in Anthony Harris, Eric Kendricks, Anthony Barr, Harrison Smith, Mike Hughes, Danielle Hunter, Linval Joseph, Everson Griffen, and others.
