LSU Tigers wide receiver Justin Jefferson may have been the steal of the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft when the Minnesota Vikings selected the 6-foot-1, 202-pound wideout and Louisiana native.
Jefferson, who turned 21 years young in Jan. 2020, is hyping himself up before his rookie season with the Vikings, calling himself a “diverse receiver.”
“A lot of people say I’m only a slot receiver or a lot of those things but a lot of people don’t realize that I played my whole career out on the side,” Jefferson said via Fox 9. “I’m a diverse receiver who can go wherever on the field.”
Jefferson recorded an eye-catching 1,540 receiving yards on 111 catches for 18 touchdowns in 15 games for the Tigers in his junior year in the SEC en route to LSU's undefeated season and College Football Playoff National Championship victory over Clemson four months ago alongside Heisman Trophy winner and first overall pick of the draft in quarterback Joe Burrow. Was Jefferson a product of Burrow's 2019-20 excellence or was the new Cincinnati Bengals gunslinger bettered with Jefferson's catch-grabbing skills?
Nevertheless, Jefferson was just the fifth receiver off the board when the Vikings selected the LSU junior in April, coming after Henry Ruggs III (Las Vegas Raiders), Jerry Jeudy (Denver Broncos), CeeDee Lamb (Dallas Cowboys), and Jalen Reagor (Philadelphia Eagles). Six wide receivers were selected last month in the first month, with Arizona State's Brandon Aiyuk going to the San Francisco 49ers three spots after Jefferson.
If Jefferson feels slighted being the fifth wideout off the board, he can make up for the perceived mistake by having a great debut season in the NFL for the Vikings.
