The Golden State Warriors have been at the center of scathing criticism for some time now due to the formation of their superteam. Needless to say, Hall of Famer and TNT analyst Charles Barkley has never been shy about expressing his dismay at Golden State's success over the past several years.

He doubled down on his thoughts during a recent appearance on the Unnecessary Roughness Podcast after saying he would rather stay ringless than join a superteam:

“I’d rather have no rings than join a super team,” Barkley said.

Of course, Barkley's comments may seem a bit contradictory given his attempt at a ring with the Houston Rockets late in his career. However, he admitted that the team was not very good by then.

“We were old and we weren’t very good,” said Barkley.
“First of all I got traded and then Scottie tried to join us but I had nothing left in the tank but that’s not the same because we never thought about that in our prime. We weren’t any good in Houston.”

There is certainly some truth to Barkley's comments. He and fellow Hall of Famers Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon were entering the final stretch of their playing careers. However, it should still be noted that the Rockets were still just a year removed from winning back-to-back titles by the time Barkley joined.

Regardless of how one feels about his legitimacy on the topic, there is no question that superteams have started to become the starting point in competing for a championship. That idea has even been kicked up a notch by the Warriors themselves following the signing of center DeMarcus Cousins. That said, it will be interesting to see which star players share the same mentality as Barkley does when it comes to potentially joining a superteam of their own.
