As the season is nearing, the Golden State Warriors are still exploring options to improve their roster. Free-agent point guard Darren Collison will have a workout with the team this week, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports. The 34-year-old has been retired since 2019. The opportunity to return to the NBA could be this season.

Earlier this month, Collison participated in a workout for the Los Angeles Lakers along with former all-star Isaiah Thomas and Mike James.

Collison accepting workouts doesn't entirely mean he's coming out of retirement, sources tell ClutchPoints. The upcoming session doesn't signify the Warriors are offering a spot on the team either.

The Warriors would have to waive one of their non-guaranteed contracts to sign Collison. Three players are currently on non-guaranteed deals Gary Payton II, Damion Lee, and Mychal Mulder. If the front office brings on a new player, it would be because they believe he's the perfect fit.

Collison has been on the radar of championship-contending teams since announcing his retirement. In 2020 the Los Angeles Clippers and Lakers attempted to lure him from retirement and failed. During an interview on the A Minute Til 6 podcast, Collison opened up about the two franchises trying to recruit him.

“To keep it one hundred, they overhyped the whole thing. I wasn’t even thinking about coming back,” Collison continued. “I always felt like after this season I'll access everything, but this season, I just never thought about going back.”

Almost two years later, The Warriors have plans to compete for a championship while interested in Collison's services. The veteran could be a great addition to the Golden State if he's ready to make his NBA return.
