The Golden State Warriors did a lot of moves this offseason, from drafting two high-ceiling players in the 2021 NBA Draft lottery to adding depth to their roster through free agency. However, according to president and general manager Bob Myers, Stephen Curry's extension was the “most important” decision they made this summer.
Curry signed a four-year, $215 million extension with the Dubs earlier this August, which means he'll be in Golden State until he's 37 years old in 2026. He also became the first player in NBA history to sign two contracts worth over $200 million each–having signed a five-year $201 million deal back in 2017.
Now, according to Myers, Curry was “genuinely happy” they were able to get a deal done (via Nick Friedell of ESPN).
There was never any concern about Stephen Curry leaving the Warriors. The Dubs know they need Curry as well if they want to compete for the title in the next few years. However, the extension is certainly a great show of how much Golden State values their star player.
After showing Curry that they have every intention of surrounding him with talent to maximize his remaining prime years, they quickly worked on a long-term contract. Now, the Warriors can head to the 2021-22 season without any worry and instead focus on establishing chemistry with the new guys, making the playoffs and, hopefully, contend for the Larry O'Brien trophy.
No wonder why Curry is ecstatic for his future with Golden State!
