It truly is an end of an era for the Golden State Warriors.

Following the trend of players wearing statement shirts, Stephen Curry donned a black one with the words “RIP Oracle” on his way to the Warriors’ new arena Chase Center in their season opener versus the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday.

Curry’s choice of clothing is an ode to the Warriors’ relocation from the Oakland Arena (known as the Oracle Arena since 2006), which the team called home since its opening in 1966.

The Warriors’ popularity skyrocketed at Oracle since the inception of the “We Believe” team led by Baron Davis in the 2006-07 season.

The world-famous arena eclipsed its attendance records multiple times over the years — none higher than when it hosted a staggering 20,737 fans in a Warriors loss to the Denver Nuggets back in April 10, 2008.

Golden State’s meteoric rise as an NBA power boosted its popularity even more, as Oracle sold out 230 consecutive home games by the end of the 2016–17 regular season. California truly embraced the Bay Area-based team, as they drew an average of 18,000 people per game for 12 consecutive seasons.

The Warriors brass first announced its decision to build a new arena in San Francisco and move back to the city in 2013. The team played its final game at the Oracle Arena on June 13, 2019, losing the NBA Finals to the Toronto Raptors in Game 6.

This isn’t the first time that Curry paid homage to Oracle, as he filmed himself passing by the arena last August, while saying “I’m gonna miss that place”.
