The Golden State Warriors retained a key piece to their championship puzzle with the return of assistant coach Kenny Atkinson after he reneged on a move to become the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets.

That led to some speculation that perhaps he stuck around in Golden State in a forward-thinking move as Steve Kerr's potential successor. But according to a report from Bleacher Report's Jake Fischer, that's far from reality.

Contrary to internet speculation, Atkinson's decision suggests nothing about Steve Kerr's future with Golden State, sources said. There has been no word within the Warriors that Kerr's tenure will end any time soon.

Reports have indicated that it was a family decision that ultimately led Kenny Atkinson to remain in the Bay Area. Steve Kerr confirmed the same, reiterating that his two young kids pulled major sway in keeping their dad on the Warriors coaching staff.

“Kenny's got two kids, teenagers who really wanted to stay. It's a really difficult thing to try to take a job in the middle of the Finals without really getting a chance to unwind. And I think over the course of the Finals, he just felt it. He felt like, ‘You know what, this is not the best time for me and my family to leave,'” said the Warriors coach on Atkinson's change of heart.

The succession story never really added up given where both coaches are in their respective careers. This is hardly a young coach waiting on Gregg Popovich to retire. Kenny Atkinson has actually been coaching for five years longer than Kerr has, who took the mantle for the Warriors back in 2014. Kerr is also less than two years older than Atkinson.

Barring a leave-while-you're-on-top move from Steve Kerr to ride off into the sunset, a shakeup in the coaching hierarchy isn't in the cards anytime soon.
