It's no surprise that DeMarcus Cousins‘ move to the Golden State Warriors is… well, surprising. A cursory glance on the internet and you'd probably see an abundance of memes and reaction videos to the breaking news, both from fans and players alike.
Not only because the rich got richer but it's an All-Star center, at his peak, agreeing to take a massive paycut. It's simply unheard of in the business for a player of that caliber to not get even a single offer and thus settling for mid-level money — even if the player in question is coming off a torn Achilles. After all, Wesley Matthews, a comparatively less notable player, had the same injury yet was able to secure a four-year, $70 million deal back in 2015 with the Dallas Mavericks, while Rudy Gay (also an Achilles tear victim) managed to ink a two-year, $17 million pact with the San Antonio Spurs.
The only entity that appeared to not be shocked by the announcement was Showtime Sports.
The sports network appear to have been shadowing Boogie for a while now as part of a future documentary, and they were able to capture the phone call that sealed the deal, putting the feather on the cap of his memorable 2017-18 season filled with ups and downs.
It's unclear yet when the new Warriors starting center would make his much-awaited debut with estimates pegging it between December or January, but if it happens sooner rather than later, it will be a testament to Cousins' intense desire to rehabilitate, which he displays in social media under the taglines “The Resurgence” and the hashtag #0Doubt.
