The Washington Football Team is assembling their front office and coaching staff in Ron Rivera's second season with the organization. While hiring Martin Mayhew as their new general manager, Washington is also making history by promoting Jennifer King to a full-time offensive assistant.

King was with Rivera on the Carolina Panthers and she was an assistant with Washington Football Team during the 2020 season. Besides becoming the sixth female assistant coach in NFL history, King became the first African-American female to hold a full-time assistant job in the league.

As of this moment, it is undetermined what King's new position will be entering the 2021 season. At the least, she will hold a more prominent role on the coaching staff, paving the way even further for women who are attempting to climb the coaching ranks.

On the other hand, Mayhew now becomes the next general manager for the Washington Football Team despite the initial news of Marty Hurney accepting the position. While Hurney will still have a high-ranking position in the front office, Mayhew will be the general manager, per ESPN's John Keim.

Before this offseason, Chris Grier of the Miami Dolphins and Andrew Berry of the Cleveland Browns were the only black general managers in the NFL. But this offseason, Mayhew becomes the fifth African-American general manager with Brad Holmes joining the Detroit Lions and Terry Fontenot joining the Atlanta Falcons.

Mayhew comes from the San Francisco 49ers, where he's been an executive since 2017, while he was also the general manager of the Lions from 2008-2015. With the Washington Football Team hiring Mayhew and promoting King, they are rounding out a talented and diverse coaching staff and front office.
