The Washington Redskins have a ton of work to do this offseason. They hold the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft after a 3-13 season. They are a rebuilding team full of players who can be cut to clear cap space and roster spots.

Some of the players expected to be cut in Washington are not a surprise. It is fully expected that the Redskins will cut Josh Norman after his putrid season in 2019 that ended with him on the bench. The Redskins would save $12.5 million with that move. Washington has a chance to draft Chase Young to put on the opposite side as Montez Sweat. This leaves Ryan Kerrigan without a spot. He could either be cut or traded prior to the season.

Jordan Reed has dealt with injuries throughout his entire career. There is a chance that he retires on his own but cutting Reed would save the Redskins $8.5 million. There are also players like Case Keenum and Chris Thompson who are pending free agents but will most likely not be with the team.

None of these speculations would come as a surprise in D.C. When it comes to their quarterback situation, there could be a shake up.

Could the Redskins part ways with Alex Smith?

In 2018, the Redskins sat at 6-3 with a two-game lead in the NFC East before Smith suffered a gruesome leg injury. He has not been back on the field but has made it clear that he wants to return. There are rumors of him returning in 2020 but the odds are slim.

The Redskins drafted Dwayne Haskins in the 2019 NFL Draft and it is now his job. Since this is the case, the Redskins have options with Smith. They could keep him on the roster for the entire season if they feel the need. Smith could be cut with a post-June 1 designation if new CBA is signed prior to the release. This would save the Redskins $3.4 million in cap.

Keeping Smith on the roster seems like a respect move if it is done. He suffered a horrible leg injury and had an infection that put his life at risk. The chances of him playing again do not seem likely and it would not make much sense for a Redskins’ team that hopes they found their next franchise guy. There will be plenty of roster shake-ups in Washington this offseason and Smith could be one of the biggest ones.
