Wesley Matthews, shooting guard for the Dallas Mavericks, seems extremely motivated to take his game to another level this upcoming season.

Coming off a torn achilles just a few seasons ago and putting up decent stats last season, he seems excited about the potential of what he and the Mavs can do in 2016-17. He also seems optimistic about the team's offseason additions.

Reaching his potential

Matthews, via Stephen Hunt of Today's Fastbreak, spoke about being motivated this summer:

“What motivated me [this summer] is I know that I have so much left in the tank,” Matthews said. “I know that I have a ceiling that I’m not even close to reaching, and I’m trying to get there. I want to get there; I want to ascend.

“I’m a whole different person, I’m a whole different player,” Matthews said. “I’m really just excited to get out there and just be who I know that I can be and who I want to continue to grow to be. I feel better than when I got here.”

How the new Mavs fit in

When it comes to the Mavericks and their additions this offseason, including players like Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut, Matthews believes that the Mavericks are poised to shock a lot of people.

“I see it fitting, I see it working,” Matthews said. “[Andrew] Bogut’s playing in the Olympics and Harrison [Barnes] is playing in the Olympics, [so hopefully] they come back and are healthy. The biggest part of the NBA season is developing and bonding through training camp and through workouts before any preseason ever starts, and we didn’t get a chance to do that last year.

“We’re deeper, we’re more athletic, and we’re a different team [than last year],” Matthews said. “We’re really, really a different team, so it’ll be interesting to see. I can’t wait to see what [Rick] Carlisle has in store for us. We’re going to surprise a lot of people.”

The Dallas Mavericks might be in line to make big leap this upcoming season. Wesley Matthews, alongside his team's offseason acquisitions, will play a big role in trying to turn the squad into a contender.
