The All-England Club shocked the tennis world when they announced a ban on Russian and Belarusian players at Wimbledon in 2022. Players such as world no. 2 Daniil Medvedev would be barred from participating at the All-England Club. Several players on the tour, such as Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, denounced the Russian ban, believing it to be an unfair punishment. On Friday, the ATP called out Wimbledon for their ban in a statement, then made a shocking decision involving the rankings and point system, as reported by The Tennis Podcast on Twitter.

The ATP called out Wimbledon's Russian ban, saying that it undermines “the ability for players of any nationality to enter tournaments based on merit.” Not only that, but the tour has shockingly decided to remove ATP Ranking points from the All-England Club.

While the ATP expressed understanding in Wimbledon's desire to respond to the UK Government's guidance in light of the Russian war in Ukraine, they also stressed that the ban was an “informal guidance, not a mandate.”

The tour suspended the Moscow CH 80 event and has encouraged Russian and Belarusian players to compete under neutral flags.

ATP ranking points will count for the 500 and 250 tournaments in the UK, though the unprecedented measure will go into effect at the All-England Club.

Wimbledon, perhaps the sport's most iconic tournament, will feel a lot different now with little more than prize money on the line.
