Dwight Howard is the shiniest offseason acquisition of the Washington Wizards, and with him patrolling the paint and parking himself down low in the nation’s capital beginning next season, there is some excitement over the future of the team. Meanwhile, any excitement over what number Howard is going to wear as a Wizard has now been extinguished, thanks to this photo released by the Wizards’ official Twitter account.

So there. Dwight Howard will not sport the No. 12 number in Washington, and instead will follow in the footsteps of past Washington luminaries who sported the No. 21 such as J.J. Hickson, Ronny Turiaf, and Torraye Braggs.

Howard, often referred to as “D-12,” chose to wear No. 21 because the No. 12 is already being sported by Kelly Oubre Jr. Now, Oubre could have given up his rights to the number so that an elder teammate and a superstar in his own right like Howard could use it, but apparently, that’s not just Oubre’s schtick.

With Howard seemingly content with his new jersey number, his focus should now be on helping the Wizards in achieving one of their goals, which is to rule the now LeBron James-free Eastern Conference. Howard gives the Wizards something the team hasn’t had in past years – an elite presence in the middle. Last season, the Wizards got just 15.9 points per game  (second fewest in the NBA) from their centers, but with Howard replacing Marcin Gortat as the team’s starting center, Washington should have a more dependable frontcourt.

Howard averaged 16.6 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game last season for the Charlotte Hornets.
