The Washington Wizards' 2019 lottery selection forward Rui Hachimura flashed more potential over the summer in Team Japan's exhibition matchup with Germany on Saturday.

Hachimura, 21, led the way for the Japanese men's national team as they defeated Dennis Schroder and Team Germany 86-83 in a friendly tune-up prior to the start of the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China next month. The ninth overall pick for Washington out of Gonzaga scored 31 points. Hachimura's performance follows a 35-point outing against New Zealand in a prior exhibition win earlier this month.

The 6-foot-9 Hachimura, born in Japan and fluent in the East Asian language, spent three collegiate seasons with the Bulldogs in Spokane, Washington. Hachimura moves to another Washington—District of Columbia—as his rookie season is set to begin come the fall. With star point guard John Wall out indefinitely recovering from an Achilles tear, head coach Scott Brooks' Wizards team will likely lean into a young, fresh start, most notably featuring Hachimura and 26-year-old shooting guard Bradley Beal, a two-time All-Star reportedly on the trade block.

In his junior season before declaring for the 2019 NBA Draft, Hachimura averaged 19.7 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game in 37 contests for ‘Zaga, shooting 59.1% from the floor, 41.7% from 3-point range, and 73.9% from the free throw line.

Japan has the unfortunate probability of being drawn in the United States' group. Team USA, featuring players such as Kemba Walker, Myles Turner, Donovan Mitchell, and others, split a two-game exhibition short series in Australia with the Boomers this week. Other than the United States and Japan, Group E also consists of Turkey and Czechia.
