Visual Concepts introduces the MyGM Game Mode, reinstating a fan-favorite game mode from the days of SmackDown vs. Raw. However, there are key differences between the General Manager Mode we know and love with the new, more modern MyGM Mode available to us in WWE 2K22.

MyGM Characters

For starters, the MyGM Mode actually makes you roleplay as one of WWE's on-screen authority figures: Sonya DeVille, Adam Pearce, William Regal, Stephanie McMahon, and Shane McMahon. You can also play as a custom superstar as your GM. Each GM, including the custom superstar, comes in the game with an Exclusive Power Card. We'll discuss Power Cards and other items you can use to improve your ratings later on, but for these GMs, here are their Power Cards:

  • Adam Pearce: Instigator – Increases all Active Rivalries by one Level
  • Sonya Deville: A Superstar's GM – Raise the entire roster's morale by +15
  • William Regal: Legend Whisperer
  • Shane McMahon: Coast to Coast
  • Stephanie McMahon: The McMahon Presence – Earn twice as much revenue from arena attendance in a single show
  • Custom Superstar: Beginner's Luck – Raise the popularity of a single superstar by +20

MyGM Setup

You can choose your opposing brand and rival GM if you're playing against AI, choose the difficulty between Easy, Normal, and Hard, and choose the game length from 15 weeks, 25 weeks, or 50 weeks. Local couch co-op is available for MyGM for two-player head-to-head gameplay of MyGM.

MyGM Draft

After choosing your GM and choosing a brand between Raw, SmackDown, NXT, and NXT UK, you are off to your 50-week career as GM. You will be going head-to-head in a ratings war with another GM, competing in both popularity, superstar happiness, and business profitability. At the start of your 50-week stint will be the MyGM Draft. You and your opponent will take turns drafting superstars from a customizable pool of superstars until you each have 8 superstars. Drafting superstars past the 8th round is optional and will help you manage your limited $2,750,000.00 starting budget. Take note that whatever's left from your budget after the draft will carry over to the game proper, so you'll have to balance between having expensive superstars on contract versus having diverse match stipulations in your shows.

If you're feeling lucky, you can also skip the draft and have the AI choose a balanced pool of superstars for you.

After drafting at least eight superstars, players will then be able to choose their two starting champions: one Men's Champion and one Women's Champion. Yep, disappointingly enough, there are no Tag Team Titles or Midcard Championships in MyGM Mode – find them in MyUniverse Mode instead.

Wrestler Stats

To help you determine who is best to draft, take note of the following wrestler stats:

  • Popularity – determines how well-received matches are where this superstar competes in
  • Cost – how much money it'll cost you to sign a superstar
  • Class – describes a wrestler's fighting style and determines his or her compatibility in a match against other wrestlers. There are four classes: Acrobats, Brawlers, Technicians, and Powerhouse.
  • Gender – male wrestlers can only hold the men's championship belt and compete against other male wrestlers, and the same applies to female wrestlers
  • Role – wrestlers are either a face or a heel, which affects their compatibility in a match against other wrestlers
  • Stamina – determines a wrestler's work rate and susceptibility to injuries

Managing your Roster

Your roster can be enhanced by signing enhancement talents (no pun intended), free agents, and WWE Legends. However, it doesn't seem possible to trade superstars between brands.

Wrestler Class and Role

The effectiveness of a match in WWE 2K22 GM Mode relies entirely on three factors: Popularity, Class, and Role. The popularity aspect is straightforward – more popular wrestlers produce better-received matches. However, Class and Role aren't as clear-cut as that. Player GMs will have to consider the classes of the competitors they are having in a match – for example, High Flying wrestlers tend to do well against Powerhouse wrestlers – resulting in more exhilarating matches and higher ratings.

Meanwhile, Roles dictate that Faces matching up against Heels will result in higher ratings.

Playing the matches will not affect the match rating, so simulating each match would be more efficient.

Setting up Rivalries

Rivalries can be established either through promos or by pitting superstars head to head in matches. These rivalries will naturally progress as the superstars interact more in promos, run-ins, and matches in succeeding shows. Ultimately, rivalries will conclude after a certain time, which will show a notification after their blow-off match. Rivalries enhance matches and result in higher ratings, so make use of them as much as possible.

Booking Matches

Every week, you will be responsible for booking matches for your shows. You will have control over where the show will be held (from gymnasiums to arenas), quality of road personnel, as well as show special effects to be used on the show and advertisements used to promote a show. But the meat of the matter is in the matches themselves. Here is a breakdown of how many matches and promos you can book in your shows:

  • Weekly Shows – 3 matches and 2 promos
  • Premium Shows – 4 matches and 3 promos for each brand
  • WrestleMania – 5 matches and 4 promos for each brand

You can choose between 1v1 and 2v2 matches only, and introduce different stipulations in your matches, like Hell in a Cell, Cage Match, or Submission Match. Disappointingly, there is no way to book multi-man matches, and the Royal Rumble is oddly omitted in the Premium Shows available in the game.

Power Cards and Commissioner Goals

Finally, we'll talk about two items that can help you get ahead of your competition in WWE 2K22 GM Mode. Commissioner Triple H will be giving you quests and missions throughout your term as General Manager, and we suggest that you follow all of these as completing missions award you with Power Cards. As mentioned earlier, each GM starts with their own unique Power Card, but more Power Cards can be obtained. Power Cards are one-time use cards that modify match outcomes, rivalry outcomes, and a wrestler's stats. For example, the Injury Rehab card will speed up the recovery of an injured superstar, allowing them to return back to action earlier.

Match Reports, Show Notes, and Match Ratings

After each week, you will be able to review how you did with different feedback reports. Show Notes are mock social media posts that give you a rough feel of how fans feel about your matches. Match Ratings tell you how well a match is received by the fans. Finally, the Match Report will give you information about your show's viewership, expenses, and revenue. Use this information to plan out succeeding shows and strategize around how you can beat your rival GM by the time your 50-week run as your brand's GM runs out.

MyGM Mode is a surprisingly deep game mode that has some really odd design choices. We wish we can have longer game lengths, more championship titles to fight for, multi-man matches and mixed-gender tag matches, the ability to trade superstars, and finally, online play for MyGM Mode. Hopefully, these can still be amended in the next iterations of WWE 2K, if not through patch updates over the course of the next year. We'll get to know whether or not game's more simplified show structure can be redeemed by the deep mechanics in play when WWE 2K22 comes out on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on March 11, 2022. Get the game's Deluxe version and play early on March 8, 2022.
