The Boston Red Sox labored to open the season. In fact, some even expected the Red Sox to sell ahead of the 2022 MLB trade deadline. However, the Red Sox turned things around now place second in the AL East and are in the Wild Card mix. This is a competitive team that will be buying ahead of the deadline. But what do they need?

The Red Sox have produced elite offensive numbers. They rank within the top 10 in batting average, OBP, and slugging percentage. But they are in the bottom half of the league in home runs. Adding extra pop for the lineup could be beneficial.

Boston's pitching numbers have been impressive as well. They are fifth in team ERA and sixth in WHIP. But they could use an extra pitcher or two in the rotation.

Clutchpoints recently posted a trade article for the Red Sox in which Luis Castillo, Josh Bell, and David Bednar were listed as deadline candidates for the team. So think of this as a part two for that article. Today, we are taking a look at 2 more trade targets for Boston.

2 top targets for Red Sox ahead of 2022 MLB trade deadline

Zac Gallen

MLB insider Bob Nightengale recently shared a report that stated the Arizona Diamondbacks will not be trading star pitcher Zac Gallen. However, teams often tell the media they won't trade players to see how it affects the market. Interested teams may overpay in trades if they feel as if a player is otherwise untouchable.

In other words, don't be surprised if the Diamondbacks backtrack and end up dealing Zac Gallen ahead of the trade deadline. And the Red Sox would be smart to inquire about the 26-year old right-hander.

Boston would need to create a loaded trade package in order to acquire Gallen. He is only 26-years old and enjoying a successful 2022 campaign. But the Red Sox might just catch Arizona's interest if they dig deep enough into their farm system.

The Red Sox ace right now is arguably Nick Pivetta or Michael Wacha. Meanwhile, Nathan Eovaldi and Rich Hill are on the injured list. Although Boston has pitched well this season, they need to add another starter if they want to make any kind of playoff run.

Gallen would make their rotation look far more intimidating.

Bryan Reynolds

Pittsburgh Pirates star outfielder Bryan Reynolds is another player who may not be dealt this season. However, Boston could force a trade with the right offer.

But would Reynolds be what Boston needs? Absolutely.

The Red Sox lack depth in the outfield. Kike Hernandez and Jackie Bradley Jr are not fearsome hitters. Hernandez has dealt with injury problems as well.

Other than Alex Verdugo, the Red Sox don't have a consistently reliable outfielder. And even Verdugo hasn't been great in 2022.

Enter Bryan Reynolds.

Reynolds can play any outfield spot but would slot in nicely as the Red Sox centerfielder. He already has blasted 15 home runs this year, so his power would play well at Fenway Park. His switch-hitting ability would add balance to the Red Sox lineup.

Final thoughts

Trading for both Zac Gallen and Bryan Reynolds would be fantastic. But the Red Sox would instantly improve by acquiring just one of them. Gallen's ability in the rotation would provide depth. And he is someone who could become their ace for years to come. Meanwhile, Reynolds and Boston could work on an extension if the fit plays well.

Either way, the Red Sox must look into acquiring at least one of these players.
