The postseason campaign of the Kansas City Chiefs has just ended at the hands of the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game. After the tough loss, GM Brett Veach and his staff will be going back to the drawing board in order to assess the composition of the team heading to next season.

Kansas City currently has several key players who are expected to enter free agency in the upcoming offseason and the team must figure out who to rightfully retain moving forward. Hopefully, the moves that they will make will be enough to sustain them for another playoff run in the years to come.

With that said, let's take a look at three talents that the Chiefs must re-sign in the 2022 NFL free agency.

Kansas City Chiefs NFL Free Agency Musts

3. Melvin Ingram

Linebacker Melvin Ingram has seen a resurgence with the Chiefs after he was acquired in a mid-season trade from the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was able to increase his productivity and serve as a reliable role player under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

Ingram has also been a difference-maker for the Chiefs' defense as they performed better as a unit when he arrived back in early November. In nine games played, he notched 15 combined tackles, five QB hits, and a sack for the team.

Given his contributions, it's not hard to think that both parties have formed a mutual interest in bringing back the veteran for another tour of duty once his current contract expires. In fact, the three-time Pro Bowler has also expressed willingness to return to Kansas City and help win a Super Bowl for the team in 2022.

Ultimately, Ingram's aspirations will only come to fruition if the Chiefs manage to put an offer on the table and successfully secure his services moving forward.

2. Orlando Brown Jr.

Another newcomer to the team for the 2021 season is left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. The Chiefs traded multiple assets just to snag the 25-year-old away from the Baltimore Ravens back in April.

The acquisition surely paid off for the Chiefs as Brown emerged to be one of Patrick Mahomes' best blockers in the offensive line. His contributions on the field also caught attention as he earned the third Pro Bowl selection of his career this season.

Certainly enough, the Chiefs would aim to ink Brown on a multi-year contract, given that they have already heavily invested in him right from the beginning. Aside from that, he would also be a good candidate for the 2022 franchise tag if ever both sides fail to agree on a long-term contract just yet.

1. Tyrann Mathieu

Topping this list is safety Tyrann Mathieu who has been a staple in the Chiefs' secondary ever since he arrived back in 2019. He had another productive season in Kansas City as he recorded 76 combined tackles, three interceptions, and a sack in 16 appearances as a starter.

Moreover, the 29-year-old was also the only bright spot in the Chiefs' secondary that was fairly inconsistent throughout the course of the season. Due to Mathieu's contributions, his contract extension is surely included in the Chiefs' plans, especially after he bagged the third Pro Bowl selection of his career in 2021.

However, the only hurdle for both sides is if Kansas City would be able to fit his new contract to the team's salary cap for next season, given the huge paycheck that they are also handing to Patrick Mahomes and their other stars. Given the situation, the front office would want to act fast and prioritize Tyrann Mathieu before other suitors get to swoop in and acquire his services in the upcoming free agency.
