With the MLB Trade Deadline looming, many teams across MLB are about to find out if they will buy, sell, or stay as is on July 31. Many names have been rumored to potentially become available and perhaps none bigger than Max Scherzer.

Scherzer is 37-years-old and in the last year of his contract. The Washington Nationals are currently 42-47 which isn't great by and stretch of the imagination. However, they're only 6 games back of the Mets in the NL East.

The first order of business for the Nationals is to determine how they will approach the MLB Trade Deadline. If they sell, these are the three best trade destinations for Max Scherzer, ranked.

3.) Los Angeles Dodgers

If there's a big name available at the deadline, there's almost a certainty that the Los Angeles Dodgers will pop up in some form or fashion. It just so happens they could really use some starting pitching help at the moment too.

Dustin May had Tommy John surgery back in May, Clayton Kershaw is currently on the shelf with forearm inflammation and there's a strong possibility Trevor Bauer doesn't pitch again this year. That leaves the Dodgers with Walker Buehler and Julio Urias as really the only two steady starters in the rotation at the moment with other pieces like David Price filling the gaps.

Enter Max Scherzer.

It's possible, based off Scott Boras' (Scherzer's agent) comments back in June, that the Nationals ace would seek an extension from any team that tries to trade for him. At 37-years-old, some teams might be hesitant to offer that olive branch but who knows.

“The reality of it is it’s going to have to lead to something,” Boras told NBC Sports Chicago.

That means an extension, he said.

“And the reality of it is a ton of people are going to ask,” Boras added. “He’s probably the most coveted trade chip I’ve seen, because every team that’s in it needs him.”

Max Scherzer is still a dominant pitcher, and he just finished up starting his 4th all-star game in his career. The Dodgers are trying to repeat as champions and find themselves in a bit of a desperate spot needing starting pitching. Max Scherzer would fill that gap and would be on a team that should absolutely be right in the race until the bitter end in October.

2.) San Francisco Giants

Let's stick in the NL West.

The San Francisco Giants have been one of the best stories in baseball this year. Nobody expected them to be competing and here they are in the middle of July leading the Dodgers and Padres in the NL West. Not only that, the Giants have the best record in all of baseball at 57-32 and have somehow hit the most home runs in all of MLB so far this season.

If the Giants are to keep the good vibes going, they need to add starting pitching. Kevin Gausman has been an incredible story, Anthony DeSclafani has been great but come postseason team, every team needs a true ace and the Giants don't have that. Max Scherzer would give them that.

Whether or not the Giants can hold up and keep riding this wave is anyone's guess but if they want to enhance those chances even more, landing an ace and someone of Max Scherzer's caliber would do wonders for them down the stretch as they try to continue and fight off the Dodgers and Padres.

1.) Boston Red Sox

Out of all the possible landing spots for Max Scherzer, the Boston Red Sox make the most sense.

Their offense is as good as it gets in baseball and will continue to mash. A core lineup with J.D. Martinez, Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts and Alex Verdugo is as lethal as it gets. Sprinkle in Kiki Hernandez, Hunter Renfroe and Christian Vazquez, and it's flat out unfair.

The pitching, especially the bullpen has been good for the Red Sox this year as they lead a crowded AL East. But like the Giants, they need a true ace.

Chris Sale is still recovering from Tommy John surgery and is expected to begin a rehab assignment on Thursday. While he was an ace before the injury, everyone responds differently coming back from it and it would be unrealistic to expect Sale to come in during the second half of this season and carry the weight at the top of the staff for the Red Sox.

Max Scherzer would give them their ace and allow Nathan Eovaldi to slide down to the No. 2 spot, where he's a better fit even with the sensational all-star season he's had.

The offense is in place and will continue to be top tier. If the Red Sox add Max Scherzer, it would push them over the top.
