Bills Week 17 Takeaways

3. Bills defense gets back on track

The Buffalo Bills defense looked dominant early in the year. Then they hit a bit of a lull, allowing a number of teams to push them around at the line of scrimmage. On Sunday, Buffalo's front four dominated again.

They sacked Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan five times, pressuring him countless other times. The defense also picked off Matt Ryan once.

Despite three interceptions from Josh Allen, the Bills defense stepped up. They only allowed 96 yards on the ground in the win, with Falcons running backs Cordarrelle Patterson and Mike Davis both being held in check.

Ever since the 2nd half against the Buccaneers a month ago, the Bills defense has hit their stride. They have slowed the Bucs the rest of that game, and controlled the game against the Panthers, Patriots and Falcons since.

2. Devin Singletary and Bills ground game gets rolling

Highmark Stadium was filled with snow throughout the game. Wind gusts kept passing games in check. That forced the Bills to try and run the ball. Buffalo's rush offense had been putrid for a lot of the year. But in recent weeks, it has seen a spark from Devin Singletary.

On Sunday, Singletary made a clear statement that he can carry the rock to victory.

Singletary ran the ball 23 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Singletary's recent resurgence adds a new element to Buffalo's offense. Josh Allen has continued his running prowess.

Josh Allen ran the ball 15 times for 81 yards, and two scores on the ground as well.

On a day where the weather significantly impacted passing games, it required the ability to run the ball. A few weeks ago, it appeared that the Bills running game was non-existent. That would be a problem for any team in the playoffs. But it would be specifically problematic for a team that plays home games in Buffalo in January.

2. Bills control their destiny for home playoff game

The Bills improved to 10-6 with their win vs. the Falcons. New England joined them at 10-6 with their 50-10 drubbing of the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday. However, the Bills own the tie-breaker. They split the season series, but the Bills have the better divisional record.

Buffalo finished the season next week against the New York Jets. If they win that game, they will win the AFC East for the second straight year. The Jets almost beat the Buccaneers Sunday, so Buffalo would be wise not to overlook them. But if they can win that game, they clinch the division and at least one home playoff game.
