It has been an impressive postseason showing so far for the Dallas Mavericks. Their postseason hopes seemed to be in doubt following the calf injury to Luka Doncic to end the regular season. The Mavs managed to rally around their missing star and win two of the three games he was forced to miss. Doncic made his return and helped secure the series win and advance to face the Suns.

The Suns ran away with the best record in the NBA at 64-18 this season. The Grizzlies had the next best record and ended the season a full eight games back from the Suns. Led by Devin Booker and Chris Paul, the Suns were an intimidating opponent for the Mavs. After Phoenix jumped out to a 2-0 series lead, the Mavs have scrapped back into it and picked up 2 wins of their own. The series is now tied up 2-2 and there are plenty of reasons for optimism from the Mavericks' perspective.

3 Mavs overreactions after tying series vs Suns:

Dorian Finney-Smith is the perfect complimentary piece

It oftentimes feels as if the Mavs cannot win a game unless Luka Doncic carries the team, but this is not the case. The emergence of Jalen Brunson has been extremely impactful and the Mavs have done a great job getting complimentary pieces to surround Doncic. Right at the top of the list for the best complimentary players on the team is Dorian Finney-Smith.

The undrafted forward has spent all six seasons he has been in the NBA with the Mavs. The Florida product had questions surrounding his shooting when entering the draft that likely limited teams' interest. Finney-Smith shot below 30% from three in his first two seasons in the NBA and has improved each year since this point. The 6'7 forward notched a career-high in three-point attempts per game (5.4) and three-point percentage (39.5%) this season.

His strong shooting was put on full display in Game 4. Finney-Smith ended the game with 24 points and 8 rebounds while shooting 8 for 12 on three-point attempts. His ability to impact the game without being ball-dominant is a major asset on this Mavs team. The defensive versatility he possesses also makes him incredibly valuable as well.

Jalen Brunson is a legit number two star

Every Batman needs his Robin, and Jalen Brunson is proving to be the ideal sidekick to Luka Doncic. Brunson ended with 18 points, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds in Game 4. His numbers may not jump off the page but he picked his spots to attack and provided the production the Mavs needed to secure the victory. Brunson was tied for the best plus/minus on the game at +16.

While he has been a productive player throughout his four seasons in the NBA, it feels as if Jalen Brunson has taken the next step this postseason. He stepped up to be the number one option during Luka's absence and has continued to assert himself in the offense alongside the Slovenian. At 25-year-old, there is still plenty of potential growth to be had with Brunson and he is forming into the ideal number two star to play alongside the franchise centerpiece. It also will be interesting to watch his contract situation play out as he is a free agent this offseason and is sure to demand a hefty contract. The Mavs would be wise to step up to the plate and find a way to pay Brunson especially given his recent uptick in production.

The Mavs have enough shooting

Given the ball-dominant nature of Doncic and Brunson, it is important to surround the guards with enough shooting. As a team, the Mavs shot 20 for 44 (45.5%) on three-point attempts in Game 4. This is their highest shooting mark in the series although they have eclipsed 40% in three of the four games.

Reggie Bullock, Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Davis Bertans each connected on multiple three-pointers in the matchup. It is especially impressive the Mavs shot at such a high rate considering Luka Doncic was 1-10 on three-point attempts in Game 4. Dallas has been more creative in creating three-point opportunities for their shooters and each player has capitalized. Having six of their regular rotation players shooting 35% or better from beyond the three-point arc is a massive asset for this Mavericks team.

Many people counted out the Mavericks from this Suns series, but Dallas has given reason for belief so far. The series will return to Phoenix for Game 5 but the momentum has shifted in the Mavs' favor. The team will need to find a way to win a game on the road if they are to take the series. Look for Dallas to ride their current momentum and capitalize in Game 5.
