The Indianapolis Colts could be in the market for a quarterback this offseason and one name that has been thrown around is Phillip Rivers. He is set to be a free agent this offseason and it's unclear if the Los Angeles Chargers want to bring him back for another year or two.
If Rivers does leave, he will probably be looking for a place where he can step in right away and compete for a Super Bowl. The Colts do fit those criteria, but he still doesn't make a lot of sense in Indianapolis.
Let's break down three reasons the father of nine shouldn't move to the midwest this offseason.
3. Rivers' age
Phillip Rivers is 38 years old, so he's not the long-term option in Indianapolis. The Colts need a quarterback that can be their future for 10 years, not two. If the team was going to spend a first-round draft pick on a quarterback this season and they wanted him to sit behind Rivers, it might make sense.
There are no indications that is the direction the team wants to go, so bringing in a 38-year-old quarterback doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
2. Turnovers
Rivers has always been a guy to take chances and this last season it really caught up to him. On the season, Rivers threw for 4,615 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions.
Too often in key times, Rivers was turning over the ball and that isn't something that will be beneficial for the Colts. Anyone can come in and throw interceptions for the Colts. Does it really make sense to pay Rivers a big contract?
1. Is he really an upgrade?
With everything stated above, are we sure that Rivers is really an upgrade over Jacoby Brissett? One of the big knocks on Brissett is not taking chances. Often during the season, it seemed the wide receiver had to be wide open for Brissett to even think about throwing the ball.
Rivers doesn't have the issue of not throwing the ball, but when he lets it fly into tight coverage, the ball is usually intercepted.
Brissett needs to take more chances, but not turning the ball over is better than giving the ball to the opposing team. There are other options this offseason for the Colts, but if it comes to signing Rivers or bringing Brissett back for another year it's pretty simple. Bring back the guy already on the roster.
