The 2018 season for the Kansas City Chiefs can be described in one word: explosive. MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes reigned terror on teams week in and week out. It almost felt like a blessing that they were on primetime television for us to watch.

Unfortunately, the Chiefs explosive season came to an end against the New England Patriots in the AFC championship. While the season may have ended for the fans and players, it doesn't stop for management.

Free agency is the first order of business towards improving the team. However, the Kansas City Chiefs need to be mindful due to their cap space.

The team has over $26 million in space, but will need some of that to roll over into next season when it comes to resigning all-pro receiver Tyreek Hill. Not to mention how Patrick Mahomes will break the record signing for a quarterback in a couple of years.

That is why the Chiefs need to searching for under the radar players. The top players that are being advertised always get overpaid and for a team like the Chiefs, they need more than one elite player.

They need a solid group of players to come and fill some of their holes, especially since they ranked as one of the worst defenses last season.

With that said, here are three under the radar players the Kansas City Chiefs should target.

3. Jason Verrett

Jason Verrett, Chargers

It’s no secret that the Kansas City Chiefs defense was atrocious. When it came to the secondary, there wasn’t really a sole player that stood out consistently among the rest.

As a unit, they were a liability for the defense. If it wasn’t for the high scoring offense, then the Chiefs would’ve suffered a lot more losses.

That is why the Chiefs should take a flier on Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett. The Chargers will likely move on from Verrett as his sole highlights the last few seasons have been injuries. Verrett most recently tore his Achilles last season that forced him to sit on injured reserve.  Before his constant injuries, he was a force to be reckoned with in the Chargers secondary.

In 2015, Pro Football Focus had Verrett tied for the highest coverage grade among all cornerbacks (90.9) and added three interceptions. Not to mention his stellar rookie season that put teams on notice.

Now that he’s entering free agency, teams will certainly be cautious to approach him. The Chiefs would be wise to pounce on Verrett as soon as free agency opens. He won’t cost much, so why not take a chance on him?

If he shows he’s fully recovered and can play nearly as well as he did in 2014 and 2015, then the Chiefs will have the steal of free agency. For a secondary that is in desperate need of a real threat at corner, Verrett is the perfect under the radar free agent to target.

2. Javorius Allen

Javorius Allen

A player who could fly completely under the radar for the running backs is Javorius Allen. It seems insane to add a running back to the Chiefs offense via free agency, but Allen would be a great complimentary back to Damien Williams.

Allen is most likely going to walk away from the Baltimore Ravens after being a healthy scratch for the team at the end of the season. The emergence of Gus Edwards and addition of Ty Montgomery saw Allen fall out of favor with the team.

Since there is a good pool of running backs that will get paid handsomely, Allen could come at a fair cost for the Chiefs.

Kansas City cannot afford to go splurging on players, especially running backs. But Allen would just add a different dynamic to the offense. Considering how fluid and versatile the Chiefs offense already is, it only seems fitting they bring in Allen to be the bruiser back.

He'll be somewhat of a change of pace back if the Chiefs want to run it up the gut. He’s also similar to Damien Williams in terms of being a pass catching back. Defenses won't know whether to cover him running out the backfield or if he'll stay home in pass pro.

The Chiefs offense is a matchup nightmare and adding Javorius Allen just makes it sickening for a defense to matchup against. Kansas City doesn't necessarily need to address the running back position in free agency, but considering they're in win-now mode, adding Allen just makes sense from a talent standpoint.

Being courted by one of the best teams in the NFL might just sway him into signing.

1. Dion Jordan

Despite the Kansas City Chiefs overall defensive woes, their pass rush actually came through in crucial moments. Leading the way was defensive end Chris Jones who took the league by storm. Jones tallied an amazing 15.5 sacks to lead the team.

With him, Dee Ford and Justin Houston on board the Chiefs actually have a talented group. However, Justin Houston has been plagued with injuries over the last few years. Those injuries have caused him to regress along with his age. Houston's cap hit in 2019 is over $21 million. There's absolutely no way the Chiefs bring him back on that deal. It's either a pay cut or be cut.

Regardless, the Chiefs need to continue to add another piece in their pass rush department. Justin Houston isn't a player the team should count on.

That's why the Chiefs should target Seattle Seahawks defensive end Dion Jordan in free agency. Jordan isn't a top of the line defensive end, which will make teams overlook him. He's very much a talented player that will be able to give aid to any defense he is on. On top of that, he shouldn't cost that much that'll drastically affect the Chiefs' cap space.

Pro Football Focus graded out Dion Jordan with a 66.6. That grade categorizes him as an above average player, so he's about a “B” graded player to simply put it. Jordan likely wouldn't be apart of the Chiefs base defense, assuming they stick with a 3-4.

However, base defenses are irrelevant in this day in age of the NFL. Defenses still play with true defensive ends, so Jordan will be able to devour offensive tackles. He's still a player that can get better as he'll be 29 years old when the new season arrives. That's around the typical age range that the Chiefs go for in free agency.

Jordan will assuredly be a free agent since the Seahawks will be focused on retaining stalwart pass rusher Frank Clark.

He won't majorly impact the defense, but acquiring Dion Jordan will still have an effect that everyone will feel.
