The San Francisco 49ers suffered a disappointing 24-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1 that saw an injury to wide receiver Marqise Goodwin limit his effectiveness and availability.

This has led to questions about whether the quad issues will play an impact in his status to take the field in Week 2 against the Detroit Lions. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has voiced that if Goodwin is unable to play, it will result in a greater role for rookie wideout Dante Pettis, according to Joe Fann of 49ers.com.

Pettis put up a solid outing in the season opener against the Minnesota Vikings posting a pair of catches on five targets for 61 receiving and a touchdown. He had a 22-yard touchdown catch in the back of the end zone on a precise throw from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo despite having to maneuver away from defenders in the process to find Pettis in tight coverage.

The rookie wideout has shown that he can be a big playmaker for the 49ers' passing game that should quickly see him become a key feature even with Goodwin on the field. The absence of Goodwin would just increase the role he would have as a primary target next to second-year tight end George Kittle, who had five catches on targets with a team-best 90 receiving yards. There is plenty of potential for San Francisco to develop a steady passing game with the plethora of young talent that could step up as the season rolls along.

These next few days should be key to determining Goodwin's status for Week 2 against the Lions as the team is hoping to have their leading receiving option in the fold. He had proven in the tail end of last season that he can be a huge playmaker behind the strong connection that he has built with Garoppolo.
