Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that injured San Francisco 49ers running back Raheem Mostert is believed to have a mild MCL sprain. While it is unclear how long the injury would potentially keep the back sidelined, he is expected to undergo an MRI as soon as Monday.

Injured in the 49ers' game against the New York Jets, the 4th-year back was among a trio of San Francisco players injured Sunday afternoon, with quarterback Jimmy Garopollo expected to miss next week's game with an ankle injury, and defensive end Nick Bosa feared to have torn his ACL. That Mostert's injury does not appear, at least at this juncture, to be quite as serious has to be a relief for a San Francisco squad looking to return to postseason contention following last year's Superbowl run.

Expected to be a key contributor coming into the season, Mostert began the match with an 80-yard breakaway touchdown, in which the veteran reached an astounding top-speed of 23.1 MPH, according to NextGen stats, the fastest pay from scrimmage recorded over the last 5 seasons. The touchdown putting the 49ers up 7-0, in what would eventually be a 31-13 romp over the hapless Jets, would be overshadowed by Niners' injuries and questions that arose postgame over the quality of turf at New York's Metlife stadium that may have contributed to the ailments.

Originally drafted as a special-teams player, Mostert experienced a breakout campaign last season for the 49ers, accruing nearly 900 yards and 13 touchdowns in San Francisco's final nine games and into the playoffs. Should the back be unable to play next week, it is expected that Tevin Coleman, the former third-round pick by the Atlanta Falcons, will receive a majority of the snaps.
