San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had a humorous reaction when asked about George Kittle falling short of the single-game record for most receiving yards by a tight end.

Kittle couldn't be stopped in Sunday's 20-14 win over the Denver Broncos, with the second-year pro racking up seven receptions for 210 yards and a touchdown while reeling off an 85-yard score in the process.

Of course, with five more receiving yards, Kittle would have been able to surpass the record set by former Broncos great Shannon Sharpe, who posted 214 yards in 2002.

But when asked about Kittle not getting another opportunity to set the record, Shahan responded with a joke.

From Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group:

#49ers Kyle Shanahan on why he didn't get George Kittle one more catch for 5 yards to break Shannon Sharpe's TE record with Mike Shanahan's Broncos: “The only people probably happy were Shannon Sharpe and my dad.”

He's probably right about that, as the former Broncos duo had plenty of success during their many years with the franchise. And that's the type of success that Shanahan hopes to build in San Francisco, even if the process has been a bit slow thus far.

The Niners are just 3-10 in Shanahan's second year on the job, but that may have been somewhat expected after the season-ending injury to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo back in Week 3.

San Francisco will try to build off the win against the Broncos when it hosts NFC West rival Seattle this weekend.
